2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid Review: Comfortable, tech-laden, but could use more refinement

By Mitesh Zaveri & Shrawan Raja

I got to spend a few days with the North American-spec 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid in the SX trim (AWD). This was right after my experience with the gas-powered Sportage in X-Line, so it was easy to spot the changes and the different feature mix.

Design

The refreshed Sportage’s front-end uses a wide horizontal grille with openings for the radiator and a larger lower intake. LED fog lights sit low on the bumper, and they look like an afterthought because they feel tucked away.

The headlamp area is more distinctive, and the amber DRLs use the ‘Star Map’ layout, and convert into turn signals. The cluster uses four LED elements, with cornering lights lower down.

From the side, the SX rides on 18-inch dual-tone wheels. Kia adds glossy black skirting around the fenders and along the lower body, so the frame stays cleaner, which makes it easier to get in and out.

The mirrors are body colored and power-folding. They include blind spot warning, turn signals, and a camera for the 360-degree system. The blind spot view monitor feeds video into the driver display when you signal left or right.

At the rear, the taillight cluster is fully LED, including turn signals and reverse lights. The signature lighting also converts into turn signals. The lower rear uses glossy plastic that can get scratched and show swirl marks in dusty conditions, so it needs care when cleaning.

Interior

The interior is black with synthetic leather and a second material that looks like suede in some areas. The door cards have soft-touch material on the upper sections and where your arm rests. The SX includes a Harman Kardon surround sound system.

Comfort, Seating & Space

The front seats are synthetic leather with perforation, since they are heated and ventilated, with buttons on the center console. Heated steering wheel control is also present, and it is two-stage. The rear seats are heated, and the headrests feel slightly firm.

The steering wheel is leather-wrapped and flat on both sides. That shape gives my legs more clearance at 5’11”. The steering wheel feels pretty big to hold, especially when it comes to taking U-turns. The hands are far apart on the steering so the turning wheel needs more effort.

That said, the driver display is easier to see through the wheel opening. It adjusts for tilt and telescopic reach, manually. Paddle shifters are included, but they control regen levels, with three settings. Holding both paddles enables an auto regen setting.

Dual-zone climate is standard. The center panel is touch-based with dials on both sides, and it can switch between climate controls and infotainment shortcuts. There is a setting that controls what the panel defaults to. I prefer leaving it on climate because it is easier for quick adjustments.

One annoyance is the hard plastic where my leg rests while driving. I wanted a softer surface there.

Soft-touch material runs across the top of the dashboard. Ambient lighting is built in, and the brightness and color can be adjusted through the infotainment screen. There are 64 colors to pick from.

The windshield has heating filaments, and the control button sits under the infotainment screen. At night, I found the filament reflections distracting, with haze around the edges. I also started thinking about replacement cost if the glass gets damaged.

Infotainment & Drive Modes

The Sportage Hybrid uses a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The driver display theme can be changed, and the center information area cycles through items like trip data, tire pressure, power distribution, and idle mode.

The infotainment screen feels snappy with little lag, and allows the driver to rearrange the widgets. It includes built-in navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Connectivity includes Bluetooth and USB. It also shows hybrid information such as fuel economy, electric motor use, and idle behavior.

A small annoyance is swipe behavior. Pulling down for notifications and quick controls should work easily, but sometimes it takes a couple of touches. The car supports a digital key setup using a phone and an NFC card, along with app-based functions through Kia Connect.

Drive modes are Eco, Sport, and My Drive. There is no Normal mode. Terrain modes include Snow, Mud, and Sand. My Drive can be configured in the infotainment system by adjusting powertrain and steering settings.

Cargo & Visibility

Cargo space is a standout. With the rear seats up, it holds 39.5 cu ft, and with the rear seats folded, it holds 73.7 cu ft. The floor stays flat with no step, and the trunk opening sits low, so loading is easy.

There is a 12V socket, a trunk light, hooks, and tie-down points. The rear seats fold 60:40, and the seatbacks may need an extra push to lock after folding. A temporary spare is included on the SX.

As for rear visibility, thanks to the well-designed rear glass and the relatively low positioning of the rear bench, the view isn’t too restricted. Door storage fits about 1 liter easily, while 1.5 liters is a tight squeeze. The cupholders can be folded away to open up the storage area. The glovebox is decently sized.

Charging points & Sunroof

Up front, there are two USB-C ports, and one also handles data connectivity. A wireless charger and a 12V socket are included. Rear passengers get USB-C ports on the backs of the front seats.

The panoramic sunroof is included, but it does not open that far. I wanted it to slide back more to make better use of the roof opening.

Performance

The Sportage Hybrid uses a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with two electric motors up front, a 6-speed automatic, and mechanical AWD. Combined output is 232 hp and 271 lb-ft.

My main complaint is how the power delivery behaves. The system can feel fuzzy and confused about when to use motor drive and when to bring in the engine. I can feel the shift from motors to engine, and it is not always smooth.

When I push it, the engine can feel underpowered and a bit unsettled. It takes time to sort out acceleration, and I found it worked better with gradual throttle inputs. The 6-speed transmission contributes to that feeling. It tends to hold gears, especially first, second, and third. It can feel like it is waiting for more throttle before it upshifts.

Regen tuning is another mixed area. There are three regen levels, but one-pedal driving is not possible. In level three, lifting off tends to brake harder and gives an initial jerk, so I kept it on level two because it felt smoother.

Efficiency was good in my use. I managed about 5.0 L/100 km (47 mpg) on longer highway runs. City driving averaged about 6.5-6.6 L/100 km (36.2-35.6 mpg) after about 350 km (217 miles) of driving. Range was estimated at 750-800 km (466-497 miles) with a 52-liter (13.7-gallon) fuel tank.

Ride & Handling

Ride quality is generally comfortable. It absorbed bumps well and handled deeper potholes without feeling stiff. Steering is light. I wanted more feedback, but it is better calibrated than the non-hybrid Sportage X-Line I drove. Sport mode firms it slightly.

Brake feel is not perfect. The pedal feels spongy at first, and the stronger braking happens toward the end of travel. That behavior is more noticeable at higher speeds, but stopping power still felt strong overall.

NVH

Noise levels were good most of the time. Tire noise and wind noise were kept in check around the windows. However, under hard acceleration, the engine got louder and sounded crude, and let me know that it was working hard.

Safety

Eight airbags are included, along with ISOFIX points on both rear seats. The car includes ABS, EBD, blind spot warning, tire pressure monitoring, traction control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and smart cruise control.

The 360-degree camera system is a highlight, and includes surround view and blind spot view monitor, with many selectable views. The clarity stood out and felt ahead of what most systems offer.

Remote Smart Park Assist is included. I could move the car using the key fob to help with tight parking situations. A head-up display is also included. It can show media, navigation, blind spot warning, and cruise control information, and settings can be adjusted through the infotainment system.

Pricing

In Canada, prices (excluding delivery, destination, taxes, and other fees) starts at CAD 41,495 for the base EX trim, and reaches CAD 47,995 for the range-topping SX trim.

In the U.S., the 2026 Sportage Hybrid lineup starts with the LX at USD 30,490; the S trim is priced at USD 32,790, and the EX trim lists at USD 33,790. The X-Line trim costs USD 35,690, and the SX Prestige tops out at USD 40,590. Prices mentioned exclude title, license fees, taxes and destination charges.

TopElectricSUV says

The Sportage Hybrid SX works well as a family-friendly small SUV with a long features list, a big cargo area, and a fantastic camera system. Ride comfort is another strength, and efficiency impressed in both city and highway driving.

The main downsides are the powertrain smoothness, the low-gear behavior of the transmission, and the brake pedal feel standing out as areas to be improved in the next-gen Sportage Hybrid expected in 2027 with the TMED-II system.
