6 important fixes Toyota needs to make for the next-gen bZ

The Toyota bZ (formerly called Toyota bZ4X, by which it’s still known in global markets) has become one of the top-selling electric cars in the U.S. in recent months.

However, it’s not the most well-rounded EV. I evaluated a global-spec model up close this week, and felt that it needed at least six substantial improvements to catch up with the Tesla Model Y globally and in the U.S.

Here are the changes or fixes that I wish to see implemented in the next-generation Toyota bZ.

1. Better range

Toyota renamed the bZ4X to bZ in the U.S. with the 2026 model year update, while also bringing a 25% improvement in range. The maximum EPA-estimated range increased from 252 miles to 314 miles, which was a commendable effort.

However, this figure is still short of the Tesla Model Y’s 357 miles and makes the vehicle less confidence-inspiring on long road trips, especially in winter.

2. Quicker charging

The current Toyota bZ can charge from 10% to 80% SoC in around 30 minutes, and while that is not painfully slow, it is behind emerging industry benchmarks. Some competitors have cut this time to 15-20 minutes, bringing the experience closer to refueling a Toyota RAV4.

3. One-pedal driving

One-pedal driving allows the driver to not only decelerate the vehicle but also bring it to a complete stop simply by lifting their foot off the accelerator pedal. The feature is particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic, making daily commutes less tedious.

While the current bZ offers adjustable regenerative braking, it still requires the driver to use the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. Another welcome upgrade could be a memory function for the selected regenerative braking setting.

4. Enhanced packaging & lower floor

The Toyota bZ does not disappoint in terms of cabin space, but from our first-person interaction, it is evident that the interior packaging has room for improvement.

For instance, the absence of a glovebox is a major omission in an otherwise practical cabin. Toyota would also have to find a way to lower the cabin floor to improve the knee room for six-foot or taller occupants.

The bZ’s cargo volume, rated at 27.7 cu. ft. behind the second row, is not particularly impressive either, and it is no match for the RAV4, which offers up to 37.8 cu. ft. of cargo space. In addition to expanding the cargo capacity behind the seats, Toyota should also think about a frunk in the next generation.

5. Improved tech

The Toyota bZ is largely sorted on the tech front, offering a dual wireless smartphone charger, a 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 64-color ambient lighting system, Plug & Charge capability, and more.

However, the 7-inch digital instrument cluster needs a new, better-organized UI and should be repositioned such that the steering wheel does not obstruct its view for taller drivers.

6. GR Sport

While it need not be as wild as the bZ Time Attack Concept we checked out last year, a GR Sport version of the next-gen bZ could make this EV interesting to more buyers.

Like the Tesla Model Y, the next-gen Toyota bZ could have a strong appeal among enthusiast buyers if it is offered in a sportier grade as well.

Toyota’s GR Sport series could come in handy here, developing upgrades such as underbody spoilers, special wheels, a retuned suspension, sport front seats, and more. A dual-motor setup would have to be standard, while any increases in power and torque would be welcome bonuses!
