New Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (2026 U.S. launch) in Storm Cloud displayed in Zurich

We checked out the all-new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid at the 2025 Auto Zurich show, where it made its first public appearance in Switzerland following its world debut in May. The RAV4 is the best-selling car in the U.S., but its ranking in Europe remains around the 20s, with the smaller Yaris Cross attracting more customers.

The sixth-generation RAV4 carries some big changes, introducing a new digital platform, redesigned hybrid systems, and a sportier character. The European-spec vehicle on display was finished in the bluish gray color, called Storm Cloud in the U.S., offering an early look at what’s also heading to the U.S. for the 2026 model year.

Design

The 2026 RAV4 adopts a more muscular stance with a wide hammerhead front end and squared-off proportions that separate it from the outgoing model. The detail-heavy front fascia, LED light signature, and new model badge add further differentiation.

The new RAV4 continues with the TNGA-K platform but benefits from structural reinforcements to improve ride comfort and handling. The interior has been redesigned with a simplified layout and upgraded materials.

GR Sport

Specialties of the RAV4 GR Sport include GR-tuned suspension, recalibrated power steering, and reinforced rear bracing for sharper handling. It rides on exclusive 20-inch black alloy wheels and features a functional matrix grille with a GR-specific mesh pattern.

The cabin gets GR logos, red contrast stitching, and aluminum pedals. In Europe, the GR Sport is available as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, while in the U.S., it will come only as a 320-hp PHEV AWD. In both markets, this trim should attract young buyers.

Interior

The digital cockpit features a 12.3-inch driver display and a large 12.9-inch touchscreen that integrates Toyota’s latest multimedia system. The demo car in Zurich also featured the new Arene software platform, which supports faster over-the-air updates and powers Toyota Safety Sense’s latest generation. In the U.S.-spec model, the Arene platform enables a further evolution of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system.

Specifications

As in the U.S., the European-spec RAV4 will be available only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. The new 2.5-liter hybrid delivers 191 hp with AWD configuration or 183 hp with FWD. The PHEV, with a 22.7 kWh battery and dual motors, produces 304 hp and an electric range of up to 62 miles (WLTP).

The upgraded PHEV system now supports 11 kW AC and 50 kW DC charging, the latter topping up the battery from 10 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. Both systems benefit from improved thermal management for better efficiency in cold weather.

U.S. Release & Pricing

For the U.S., the 2026 RAV4 will be offered in Core (LE, XLE, Limited), Rugged (Woodland), and Sport (SE, XSE, GR Sport) trims, all with hybrid or plug-in hybrid powertrains. Output touches 320 hp in the PHEV AWD grades and 236 hp in hybrid AWD versions.

Toyota says the 2026 RAV4 will arrive in U.S. dealers in late 2025. Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but the new model is expected to continue as one of the most accessible electrified SUVs in its class, beginning at under USD 34,000.
