Update (March 27, 2026): The confirmed world premiere date has been added to the story.

Mercedes plans to unveil the upgraded 2027 Mercedes GLE on March 31, and roll it out in the U.S. shortly after. What the Germans have also made clear at the brand’s Strategy Update on February 12, 2026 is that the new GLE family will carry more weight in China and other parts of Asia than before.

Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius grouped the new GLE and the new GLE Coupe into the brand’s near-term launch wave, saying: “In these next three months alone, you will see the new GLE, the new GLE Coupe, the new GLS, the new electric C-Class, the new AMG GT,” alongside the VLE and Maybach S-Class. That confirmed both body styles are close to their public debut and will share the same stage.

The bigger story is the GLE’s regional role. In the China strategy section, Mercedes’s China boss Oliver Thöne said the current GLE there is still an imported model and added: “By mid-2026, we will replace it with a fully localized long-wheelbase GLE.”

Back during the Capital Markets Day 2025 presentation held on February 20, 2025, Mercedes had revealed that it was aiming for best-in-class rear seat comfort and spaciousness with the new GLE.

Mercedes will introduce a long-wheelbase GLE in China based on the upgraded SUV (rendered). There’s no plan to offer this version in the U.S.

Thöne hinted that the long-wheelbase GLE will bring “all the intelligence” he had just outlined for China, including the latest MB.OS software stack, over-the-air updates, and China-specific ADAS developed with Momenta for complex local traffic situations such as traffic lights, cut-ins, pedestrians, and hands-off driving support.

The new GLE also appears to have a crucial role to play in Mercedes’s response to tariffs and the wider geopolitical situation. During the analyst Q&A, Mercedes CFO Harald Wilhelm said the company’s 2026 assumptions already include “the localization of the GLE in China,” showing the model is part of Mercedes’ tariff, cost, and manufacturing planning.

The updated GLE also takes on a broader regional role. Mercedes sales chief Mathias Geisen said some Asian markets are shifting “into grand limousines and MPVs,” adding that “this is where GLE and GLS come in” for those changing customer preferences.

The next GLE is also in line for major tech upgrades. Wilhelm said Mercedes can “proliferate it into the entire product portfolio. It’s not only about the CLA or it is not only about the GLA. No, it also goes into the S-Class, into the GLE, into the GLS to come,” pointing to major software, infotainment, and driver-assistance upgrades for the next GLE family.

Going by official information, spy shots, and media reports, the 2027 Mercedes GLE will carry a wide set of changes, including an illuminated grille, Digital Light headlamps, redesigned star-motif taillights, the latest MBUX Superscreen, Active Ambient Lighting, a new steering wheel, upgraded driver-assistance features powered by MB.OS, a Burmester 4D audio upgrade, a six-cylinder PHEV, and a new P2 strong-hybrid powertrain.
