Update (March 19, 2025): Story updated with details from the Lean Asset Strategy announcement.

The Mazda CX-5, the brand’s best-selling model in the U.S., is set for a full redesign after eight years, marking its entry into its third generation later this year. In my experience with the compact SUV, I loved its stylish looks, well-equipped interior, and engaging performance. However, you haven’t seen much about it on TopElectricSUV since it lacked any form of electrification in America. That is, until now.

Mazda has confirmed that the next-gen CX-5 will be available as a hybrid, aligning with the segment’s shift toward electrification. Following the gas model’s introduction this year, it is expected to be released in the U.S. in 2027, and here’s everything you should know about the incoming SUV.

Mazda has confirmed that it is developing a brand-new hybrid system for the next-generation CX-5. While the CX-50 Hybrid, introduced last year, uses Toyota’s hybrid powertrain, the Mazda CX-5 Hybrid, arriving in 2027, will use an in-house system.

Next-generation CX-5 currently under development and planned to be equipped with a Mazda-developed hybrid power system combining a Skyactiv engine featuring improved exhaust and heat efficiency with electrification technologies.

Will run alongside the CX-50

The new CX-5 will continue alongside the CX-50, despite initial speculation about possible replacement.

In an interview with USNews, Mazda North American Operations CEO Tom Donnelly said that the CX-5 remains popular, exceeding 100,000 units sold last year, and expects this momentum to continue with the new model that’s launching soon.

Mazda views the CX-5 as an urban, sophisticated model, distinct from the outdoors-oriented CX-50, which appeals to adventure-focused buyers through rugged design and specialized trims like the Meridian edition. He sees strong demand in this segment in the U.S., and believes there is room for both SUVs, as each targets a different type of buyer.

Design & Styling

Refined looks

Mazda will retain its signature ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion’ design language for the new CX-5 but refine it with more dynamic proportions and a bold, sensual look. We expect the SUV to debut a new shade of red, continuing Mazda’s tradition of launching key models with an exclusive color, and sport the new Mazda logo.

The next-gen Mazda CX-5 (illustrated) will feature an evolution of the ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion’ design language, while borrowing cues from the 創 Arata design.

Aggressive front

Having analyzed recent spy shots of the first test prototypes from the U.S. and Europe, we notice that the front fascia will feature slimmer headlights, inspired by Mazda’s 創 Arata design. The two-tier lamps and sharpened grille lend the compact SUV a more upright stance.

Longer body

The Japanese designers have preserved the CX-5’s generous glasshouse which should retain the current level of outward visibility. Noticeable changes on the profile include new door skins, thicker cladding, and sharpened door handles with capacitive touch, all of which have been reflected in our exclusive illustrations. Interestingly, the next-gen CX-5 appears to have grown, with test prototypes showing a thicker D-Pillar and longer rear overhang.

Bulkier rear

At the rear, the taillights will be slimmer and adopt an L-shape, while the Mazda lettering could take the place of the conventional logo. We’re also noticing a bulkier rear and tailgate design in test prototypes, which is similar to the CX-90’s layout. Unlike many competitors that are phasing out visible exhaust pipes, Mazda is expected to retain exposed dual exhaust tips, a subtle indication that the brand intends to continue internal combustion engine (ICE) models for as long as possible.

Interior & Features

Functional design

The interior is expected to prioritize function over form, and focus on usability. That said, a new slim dashboard is expected to house a wide, free-standing central display, while a traditional round steering wheel with push buttons and toggle switches should ensure a tactile experience.

In the 2026 CX-5, we’re expecting that Mazda’s driver-centric approach will remain a priority. It should emphasize functionality over excessive digitalization, as observed in the CX-50 (pictured).

12.3-inch gauge cluster

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, sourced from Panasonic, should provide key driving information, while a traditional climate and multimedia control panel with physical knobs and buttons will ensure ease of use.

Bigger boot

Test prototypes suggest a slightly thicker D-pillar in the 2026 CX-5, which would then translate to a larger cargo area. While rear knee room may see minimal improvement, Mazda appears to be addressing concerns about the current model’s limited 29.1 cu. ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats. For comparison, the Honda CR-V offers 39.3 cu. ft., while the Toyota RAV4 provides 37.5 cu. ft. An expanded boot would also compensate for the battery and electricals of the Hybrid, preserving the SUV’s practicality.

Specifications

Although electrified, the next-gen CX-5 will emphasize simplicity to keep costs down and enhance reliability. Mazda aims to reduce complexity by approximately 60%, as outlined in the company’s aforementioned investor presentation.

Plan to equip next CX-5 with a Mazda-developed hybrid engine.

The hybrid system will be indigenously developed, allowing Mazda to maintain control over engineering, avoid licensing fees, and ensure a driving experience that aligns with Mazda’s ‘Jinba ittai’ philosophy.

The CX-5 Hybrid (rendered), unlike the CX-50 Hybrid, should offer a FWD option. Considering the in-house developed powertrain, we’re expecting it to offer a driving experience that’s 100% Mazda-like.

2.5L SkyActiv-Z Hybrid

The 2.5-liter SkyActiv-Z gasoline engine will be used in Mazda’s in-house hybrid system for the new CX-5. Mazda says that this next-gen combustion engine will deliver “a higher level of driving performance,” and is designed to deliver “high fuel economy in a wide range of situations.”

(SkyActiv-Z) To be introduced in combination with Mazda’s proprietary hybrid system from the next Mazda CX-5 by the end of 2027.

From Mazda Motor Corporation’s Multi Solution Briefing, announced on March 18, 2025

In its highest spec, this system should have an electric generator motor and an electric propulsion motor, generating around 200 hp, and offer a fuel efficiency of around 40 mpg (EPA-est. combined). The lithium-ion battery should be 1.1-1.5 kWh capacity, and should give drivers a couple of miles of pure-electric range.

Lesser configurations

Mazda has said that it is streamlining the next-generation CX-5 to reduce costs and improve profitability. The company is evaluating both fixed and variable costs throughout the supply chain, aiming to lower the break-even point and boost unit profits.

Hence, Mazda is restructuring its cost-planning strategy, closely aligning spending with buyer needs, and reducing complexity. This involves cutting the variety of CX-5 models by 60%, significantly simplifying production. Additionally, Mazda is reducing powertrain options to limit complexity and expenses. Overall, buyers can expect fewer trim levels, option packs, and engine choices, resulting in a simpler, more cost-efficient, and value-oriented CX-5 lineup.

Release Date & Price

July-Sept 2025 world premiere

As for the new CX-5’s global premiere, Craig Roberts, Managing Director at Mazda Southern Africa, told MoneyWeb that it will debut in the third quarter of this year (between July and September 2025).

U.S. launch

While Mazda North American Operations should announce the next-gen gas model this year, we are expecting the first units of the hybrid to reach U.S. dealers in 2027. Upon its launch, the CX-5 Hybrid will compete with the facelifted CR-V Hybrid, next-gen RAV4 Hybrid, as well as the Tucson Hybrid, Sportage Hybrid, and the Forester Hybrid.

Mazda is expected to price the next-gen CX-5 Hybrid at around USD 34,000, which should be competitive for the compact hybrid SUV segment.
