First Look Review: Deepal S07’s sharp styling conceals a soft-spoken cabin

The Deepal S07, a midsize SUV available in pure-electric and extended-range electric variants, forms the base for Mazda’s EZ-60/CX-6e, now on sale in China and Europe, and confirmed for Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.

At a media event recently, we had a chance to get up close with the pure-electric variant of the Deepal S07, and take it for a spin. Here are some interesting observations we made in the Chinese Tesla Model Y competitor:

Design

Designed in Turin, Italy, the Deepal S07 features a modern and fluidic exterior. The low and sloping hood, concave nose with largely covered upper and middle sections, and slender headlights lend the vehicle’s front end a sporty appearance.

The side profile has a sleek appearance with a gradually sloping roofline and a curvy beltline that initially drops before swiftly rising toward the rear. Also worth noting here are the electric hidden door handles, frameless windows, and 20-inch wheels.

Deepal claims a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.258 for the S07.

At the rear, the taillight stretches across the width and includes an illuminated brand logo in the center. The rear spoiler integrates a vertically oriented, motorsport-inspired high-mounted stop lamp.

Interior & Features

The cabin of the Deepal S07 includes heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and synthetic leather upholstery in black or orange color options.

Sitting in the car, we noticed many premium touches including imitation quilted leather seat covers, convincing faux wood inserts, metallic highlights, sporty contrast stitching, and good-quality plastics. These comfort and convenience features are likely to be present in Mazda’s SUV as well.

The S07 features a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen which can rotate right or left by up to 15 degrees. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and also gesture controls and voice commands.

On the tech front, the Deepal S07 features a Qualcomm 8155 chip, a high-resolution infotainment system, and a comprehensive driver assistance suite. A 14-speaker Sony audio system with active noise cancellation is integrated into a floating center structure called the “sound island.”

The S07 also features a front headrest speaker, an augmented-reality head-up display (HUD), and a 40-watt ventilated wireless fast charger.

The S07 offers faux quilted leather seats which feel comfortable and offer excellent back, side and neck support. In the rear, we were impressed by the comfortable floor height, wide seats, and generous space all around.

Safety features include electronic stability control, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

Specifications

The Deepal S07 measures 4,750 mm (187 inches) in length, 1,930 mm (76 inches) in width, and 1,625 mm (64 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114 inches). It has a 125-liter (4.4 cu ft) front trunk and a 510-liter (18.0 cu ft) rear cargo area that expands to 1,250 liters (44.1 cu ft) with the rear seats folded.

In the UK, the pure-electric variant uses a rear-wheel-drive layout powered by a single-speed automatic transmission and a permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The motor delivers 160 kW (214 hp) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque, allowing a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 7.9 seconds.

Power comes from a 79.97 kWh NMC battery, providing a WLTP-certified range of 475 km (295 miles). It supports 11 kW AC charging, taking around 8 hours for a full charge, and 92 kW DC fast charging, which replenishes the battery from 30% to 80% in 35 minutes.

First Drive Experience

Since we drove the S07 immediately after the smaller S05, its more premium feel was apparent as soon as we stepped into the cabin. Its heavy doors shut with a reassuring thud, and the cabin is noticeably quieter than that of the S05.

The S07 quickly reaches around 35 mph from rest and feels sufficiently quick for urban driving. Deepal offers four driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Custom.

We noticed a perceptible difference between Sport mode and the more commonly used Comfort mode. In Sport, the vehicle feels quicker and more responsive, with ample torque available as soon as the accelerator is pressed.

The S07’s steering has a nice weight to it and feels responsive. The midsize EV also feels more planted than the S05 around corners, making it a confidence-inspiring vehicle to drive.
