Update (September 18, 2026): ‘MY2027 in the U.S.’ added; ‘Price & Release Date’ revised.
Following the refresh of the second-gen NX, Lexus is working on a mid-cycle refresh for the fifth-gen RX, which broke cover in May 2022. The BMW X5 rival is expected to receive this update in the U.S. next year for the 2028 model year.
Here’s everything we know and expect from the new Lexus RX:
Design
In line with Lexus’s familiar approach to mid-cycle refreshes, the fifth-gen RX’s exterior is likely to stay largely faithful to the current design. While cosmetic revisions are expected around the vehicle, a major character change is unlikely, and spy shots of early prototypes support that view.
The Lexus RX facelift will likely have tweaked headlamp graphics and a newly designed bumper at the front. Lexus transitioned from the signature ‘spindle grille’ to a ‘spindle body’ for the RX when it redesigned the model for its fifth generation.
It will likely steer further away from the original direction with the upcoming refresh, bringing an even more sophisticated architecture that doesn’t look like a traditional grille.
On the sides, the only thing new in terms of design will likely be the wheels. In the U.S., Lexus should provide multiple new wheel options in 19- and 21-inch sizes.
The rear end will likely incorporate changes such as a revised bumper and bolder tail lamp graphics. Lexus may also offer some new paint options to further distinguish the new RX from the current model, but we don’t expect an overhaul in the looks department.
Interior
A new dashboard with a slimmer and more symmetrical design should lend the cabin a cleaner look. The driver-facing section of the dashboard may no longer be angled toward the driver in the RX. The vehicle start/stop button should be relocated to a lower position for easier access.
Lexus may also visually separate the 12.3-inch instrument cluster from the 14.0-inch infotainment screen, giving the dashboard a cleaner, more horizontal look, like the new ES Hybrid. The software is also expected to be new.
Lexus should use touch-operated buttons for the climate control system and embed them into the dashboard, on the flanks of a knurled scroller to adjust the volume. We also expect a redesigned steering wheel featuring an oblong center pad with block-lettered brand inscription.
A new ‘Sensory Concierge’ feature will likely synchronize the mood lighting system, music, climate control, fragrance, and seat temperature to create a home-like ambiance. Customers should be able to choose from three different modes for this feature: Inspire, Radiance, and Revitalize.
Specifications
Lexus offers three electrified variants for the current RX: 246 hp 350h hybrid, 366 hp 500h hybrid, and 304 hp 450h+ plug-in hybrid. The 350h and 450h+ variants have a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, while the 500h variant sports a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine.
Sixth-gen Hybrid
The new RX should migrate to the sixth-generation Lexus hybrid technology in both full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The power control unit (PCU) and transaxle should be combined in a single, compact unit that is about 22 lb. lighter and 3.9 inches shorter.
The weight and height reduction should lower the vehicle’s center of gravity, improving stability and handling. The inverter should feature silicon-carbide (SiC) semiconductors, reducing energy losses and improving fuel efficiency.
We expect updated ECU programming as well, aimed at a smoother transition between EV and HEV modes. The rear motor should always remain in operation, even in straight-line driving.
Upgraded PHEV system
Lexus will likely replace the 18.1 kWh battery pack of the RX 450h+ with a 22.7 kWh unit with the upcoming refresh, increasing the EPA-estimated electric range from the current 37 miles to around 50 miles.
The system power and towing capacity, currently rated at 304 hp and 3,500 lb., may also see improvement. A power-operated charge port door and a new 50 kW DC fast-charging support should make charging more convenient.
RX Morizo RR
The RX refresh may also welcome a new high-performance ‘Morizo RR’ variant, aimed at enthusiasts who want more aggressive styling, a more dynamic driving experience, and better on-road performance than the F Sport trim.
While F Sport Performance is exclusive to the 500h hybrid variant, Morizo RR could be exclusive to the plug-in hybrid variant. According to Japan’s Mag-X magazine (via creative311.com), the RX Morizo RR could pack 600 PS (592 hp) of system power. A lowered ride height, special bumpers, unique wheels, etc. could also be among the upgrades.
MY2027 in the U.S.
Lexus has carried over the current RX for the 2027 model year, adding optional red front and rear brake calipers to the F Sport Handling and Performance grades. There are no changes to the vehicle’s design, interior, or tech, with the big updates saved up for the RX refresh.
Price & Release Date
The prices of the facelifted Lexus RX’s hybrid variants could range from around USD 58,000 to approximately USD 69,000. The renewed plug-in hybrid could be priced between around USD 68,000 and USD 75,000.
We expect Lexus to release official information about the updated RX in the first half of 2027.
