U.S.-spec Kia K5 Hybrid (2027 release): Sharp looks, Pleos Connect & TMED-II expected

The current-gen Kia K5, introduced in 2019 and also available as a hybrid internationally, received its first facelift in 2023. The updated gas-powered version was subsequently launched for the 2025 model year in the U.S., debuting at the 2024 Chicago Auto Show.

Instead of replacing it with an all-new model, Kia is preparing a second facelift to keep the K5’s wheels turning.

The headline is that, with this refresh, the U.S. will welcome the hybrid variant of the Korean midsize sedan. Here’s everything we know about and expect from the new Kia K5 Hybrid:

At its 2026 CEO Investor Day, Kia announced plans to launch three new hybrid models in the U.S. by 2030. The first of these products will be the K5 Hybrid, arriving in 2027.

Starting with the Telluride HEV and Seltos HEV in 2026, we will expand the lineup sequentially with the K5 in 2027, K4 in 2028, and a pickup HEV in 2030, thereby extending HEV offerings across all models.

Design

The new Kia K5 Hybrid will feature an evolutionary design while retaining its familiar, modern three-box sedan shape. The exterior will carry a simpler and more mature character compared to the current model, as shown in our exclusive renderings.

Based on spy shots, at the front, Kia is expected to do away with the upper grille, lending a sleeker and sportier look to the nose section. A gloss-black trim strip adorned with additional DRL bands visually extends from the headlamps, with a body-colored bumper section below.

The front end of the new Kia K5 Hybrid, as shown in our exclusive renderings, should look sportier and cleaner, especially in the upper half.

Two-module headlamps framed by angular DRLs should bring a sense of subdued aggression to the front end. The lower section of the front will likely be relatively busy, featuring a wide, horizontally split air intake in the center and muscular, geometrically shaped cladding on either side.

The side profile retains the streamlined appearance, with the roof sloping into the C-pillars and rear windshield in a continuous sweep, unlike on a traditional three-box sedan. The transition from these elements to the rear bodywork and decklid should be similarly cohesive.

Unlike some all-electric Kias, we don’t expect to see digital side mirrors or flush-fitting door handles. Body-colored wheel arches and conventional alloy wheels with sufficient open spaces between the spokes should lend the new K5 Hybrid a familiar look.

Kia should offer the new K5 Hybrid (rendered) with 16-, 17-, and 18-inch alloy wheel options.

The rear end should also be entirely new, featuring angular C-shaped taillights with wide inward extensions, a sharper bumper, and a new trunk lid with a more pronounced integrated spoiler.

Interior

The interior of the new K5 Hybrid is expected to be a big departure from the current model, primarily thanks to a new cockpit layout complete with a redesigned center console and new steering wheel. We expect a cleaner look, better ergonomics, and improved noise insulation.

Spy media suggest that the new K5 Hybrid will be among the first Kia models to adopt Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) Pleos Connect cockpit, which features two main displays. One is a slim 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster positioned atop the dashboard.

The other display is a tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system, which should be offered in 12.9- and 14.6-inch versions depending on the variant.

The AI-led infotainment system can show up to three windows side by side, such as one with key driving information and a music player on the driver’s side, one with the navigation map in the center, and one with the web browser on the passenger side.

The app drawer shortcut and comfort controls remain accessible along the bottom of the touchscreen. A panel of physical switches and knobs below the screen also lets occupants operate the comfort functions, adjust the audio volume, and turn the hazard warning lights on or off.

Specifications

The K5 Hybrid should receive HMG’s TMED-II powertrain with the upcoming refresh. Available in multiple versions, Kia is likely to opt for the configuration based on a 1.6-liter turbocharged gas engine, with a system torque of 380 Nm (280 lb-ft), which debuts in the new Tucson Hybrid.

We estimate that the U.S.-spec K5 Hybrid (rendered) could achieve around 50 mpg combined.

HMG says its next-gen hybrid system based on the 1.6-liter turbocharged gas engine improves the fuel efficiency of midsize SUVs by more than 4%. The company has not stated the potential gain for midsize sedans but could be targeting an EPA-estimated fuel economy of around 50 mpg for the new K5 Hybrid.

In South Korea, the current K5 Hybrid’s powertrain combines a 2.0-liter gas engine producing 152 PS (150 hp) and 19.2 kgf·m (139 lb-ft) of torque with an electric motor developing 38.6 kW (52 hp) and 205 Nm of torque (151.2 lb-ft). This setup gives it a fuel economy of up to 19.8 km/l (47 mpg) on the local test cycle.

A new Stay Mode should allow using the new K5 Hybrid’s air conditioning, multimedia, and other convenience features solely using the energy stored in the traction battery for up to one hour, provided the state of charge is between 70 and 80 percent.

Price & Release Date

The refreshed Kia K5 Hybrid is expected to premiere in the first half of 2027. It will be manufactured in South Korea, which should be its launch market. The U.S. release should follow soon after, with prices starting at just over USD 30,000.

While Hyundai offers the comparable Sonata hybrid variant in the U.S., 2027 will finally be the year Kia launches a midsize sedan with a hybrid option.

Demand for hybrid cars is steadily improving in the U.S., especially in the midsize sedan segment. In the first eight months of 2026, Honda sold 61,487 units of the Accord Hybrid, registering 17.6% year-on-year growth. At Toyota, Camry Hybrid sales grew 15.3% year-on-year in H1 2026, reaching 179,033 units.

The K5 was Kia’s fifth-highest-selling model in the U.S. in 2025 and should benefit significantly from the arrival of its hybrid variant in 2027.
