Despite all the criticism surrounding the 2026 Honda Prelude‘s perceived lack of power and excitement, early signs suggest the company could be on to something. The hybrid coupe is close to meeting the company’s U.S. sales target and has begun to outsell its rivals.
Before we explain, let’s mention that we got up close with an accessorized 2026 Prelude at the GIIAS 2026 show. As shown in our exclusive pictures, we spotted a Rallye Red sample fitted with front underbody spoilers and a tailgate spoiler, which are priced at USD 350 and USD 500, respectively, in the U.S. market.
Honda started sales of the 2026 Prelude in the U.S. in November 2025, with a limited initial inventory. It delivered just 30 units in the first month and 174 units in the following month, December 2025. Through the course of 2026, stock appears to have improved significantly.
In the first quarter of 2026, Honda sold 795 units of the Prelude in the U.S., while Nissan delivered 899 units of the Z. In the second quarter of 2026, the former’s sales increased to 928 units, while the latter’s declined to 806 units.
In total, Honda sold 1,723 units of the Prelude in the first half of 2026, exceeding Nissan Z sales, which stood at 1,705 units, by 18 units. The Prelude also beat Subaru’s BRZ, which registered 1,552 units during this period.

That said, Honda still has a long way to go to establish itself as the leading brand in the segment, a position held by Toyota with its GR86, the Subaru BRZ’s corporate cousin. For reference, Toyota sold 4,007 units of the GR86 in the first half of 2026.
Honda has set a realistic annual U.S. sales target of roughly 4,000 units for the Prelude. While that is not particularly ambitious, the company already has low-roof models that are bringing in the volumes, namely the Honda Civic and the Honda Accord.
The 2026 Honda Prelude may not offer the same thrills as most of its rivals, but it has an edge for several reasons. For drivers who just want sporty styling and a touch of nostalgia, the 200-hp hybrid coupe may be all they need.
The car’s 44 MPG EPA-est. fuel economy allows customers to enjoy it more freely. With an EPA-est. range of 466 miles, it is also much better suited to long-distance road trips, an advantage likely to appeal to buyers who prioritize comfort and convenience over outright performance.
The 2026 Honda Prelude is available in one configuration in the U.S., priced at USD 42,000 (excluding USD 1,195 in destination and handling fees). Customers can opt for a dual-tone paint for an additional USD 500.
