Presenting its outlook for the 2025 U.S. automobile business on January 15, 2025, American Honda confirmed that the Honda HR-V will get “styling and technology enhancements to maintain its competitiveness in the compact SUV segment” this year.
The big question is, will the 2026 Honda HR-V get a Hybrid system with the facelift?
HR-V stays gas-only since the launch
The second-generation Honda HR-V was introduced in North America on June 7, 2022, as a distinct model from its global counterpart. While the international version features an e:HEV hybrid system, the U.S.-spec HR-V continues to rely solely on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 158 horsepower and 138 lb.-ft. of torque, and is less fuel efficient than the previous generation, which also was a gas-only SUV.

Despite updates for the 2024 and 2025 model years, Honda has yet to offer a hybrid powertrain in the U.S. This is at a time when Corolla Cross Hybrid sales continue to grow, with Toyota selling over 35,000 units last year, marking a 128.6% increase.
The 2025 HR-V retains Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes, with power sent to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a CVT. Front-wheel drive remains standard, with all-wheel drive available as an option.
Japanese-spec (ZR-V) gets the Civic Hybrid powertrain
In Japan, Honda sells the HR-V as the ZR-V, offering a Sport e:HEV hybrid powertrain. It pairs a 2.0-liter direct injection Atkinson cycle engine with a two-motor hybrid system, delivering 52 MPG (WLTC), which is similar to the Civic Hybrid that was introduced in the U.S. last year.
The ZR-V Hybrid produces 139 hp and 134 lb.-ft. of torque from the engine, while the traction motor generates 181 hp and 232 lb.-ft. Honda claims acceleration is comparable to a 3.0-liter V6. While direct comparisons are difficult, the ZR-V is nearly twice as efficient as the U.S.-spec HR-V, making a hybrid a logical future addition for the American market.
Styling & Technology enhancements for MY2026

By “Styling and Technology” enhancements, American Honda is referring to the mid-cycle action or facelift. We’re expecting a new grille and bumper, alongside fresh wheel and color options. As for the interior, the technology enhancements could include a revised infotainment system and instrument cluster.
We should have news about the 2026 Honda HR-V at the expected announcement in the first half of the year.
