Update: ‘Colors – Updated for MY2023’ sub-section of ‘Exterior,’ ‘Production & Sales,’ and ‘Price & Release Date’ sections updated.

The Hummer EV Pickup is the most in-your-face electric pickup truck today and for some time to come. The EV Pickup and its SUV sibling leave customers spellbound with their outlandish design, exceptional off-road capability, and a powertrain that produces up to four-digit power and torque figures. The Hummers of the yore weren’t minimalist by any means, but GMC has dialed things up by several notches with its electric model, which it announced in EV2X, EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1 trims in 2020.

While the electric truck’s availability is limited, a 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup will soon replace the current model, which launched exclusively in the top-of-the-line Edition 1 trim in December 2021. It includes a number of changes and new features, which we have detailed in this story.

Exterior

The GMC Hummer EV Pickup looks unmistakably Hummer. Upfront, the EV has an upright stance with a raised bonnet line. The most prominent element is the full-width LED light bar, which functions as a DRL and doubles up as a charging status indicator when the EV is plugged in. The EV also has large door-mounted rearview mirrors and squared-off wheel arches.

There are three roof-mounted (front and rear) identification lights mandated by the U.S. government for wide vehicles. The headlamps are housed below on the front bumper, which also has two heavy-duty tow hooks (front and rear each) and a muscular skid plate that appears to be built to withstand some serious off-road beating.

Enormous Wheels – Updated for MY2023

Another highlight of the Hummer EV Pickup is the tire size. It is hoisted on enormous 35-inch OD (overall diameter) Goodyear all-terrain tires wrapped around 22-inch wheels. GMC also offers 35-inch OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires wrapped around 18-inch wheels for extreme off-roading. The EV is engineered to fit even larger 37-inch tires.

The current model comes in the sold-out Edition 1 trim, in which the Extreme Off-Road Package, and thus 18-inch black wheels and LT305/70R18 Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, are standard. In the 2023 model, thanks to the introduction of the EV3X trim, 22-inch premium wheels and LT305/55R22 Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires come standard. The Extreme Off-Road Package is optional in this trim.

Infinity Roof with Sky Panels – Updated for MY2023

GMC is providing Hummer EV Pickup owners the enjoyment of open-air driving experience similar to convertibles. The transparent panoramic roof is a standard feature across the range. Additionally, customers can remove the roof panels with a few simple clicks and store them in the frunk (11.3 cu ft), designed to accommodate all the removable panels.

The 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup features a new Infinity Roof with removable “opaque” Sky Panels. GMC is likely using new glass panels that allow electronic shading for controlling the amount of natural light that goes into the cabin.

Smartly engineered cargo bed

We can’t go without mentioning the Hummer EV Pickup’s forte, its rear flatbed. The EV’s flatbed measures 60 inches (5 feet) in length. It can haul cargo up to 1300 pounds, claims GMC. That said, the towing capacity of the EV—it has four heavy-duty tow hooks, two at the front and rear each—is 7,500 pounds (company-est.).

Assist Steps – Updated for MY2023

On the current model, dealer-installed stainless-steel off-road assist steps with rock sliders are part of the standard equipment. On the 2023 EV3X trim, new, fixed assist steps built with aluminum are standard.

Colors – Updated for MY2023

The 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup is available in six new paint options, which makes it a whole lot more exciting for buyers than the current model:

  1. Afterburner Tintcoat (Orange)
  2. Meteorite Metallic (Grey)
  3. Void Black
  4. Tide Metallic (Ice Blue)
  5. Supernova Metallic (Dark Blue)
  6. Deep Aurora Metallic (Dark Bronze)

All the new colors listed here are paid options. Interstellar White, carried over from the current model, is the only one without an additional charge.

Initially, GM had planned to introduce the Moonshot Green Matte, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV’s launch color, as a paid option. It was subsequently canceled, probably as GM wants the SUV to hold on to its exclusivity. The company may introduce it on the pickup a year after the SUV’s launch, as part of its MY2024 updates.

Accessories

GMC offers an extensive range of accessories for the Hummer EV Pickup. Among them are soft and hard retractable tonneau covers to protect cargo from dust and extreme weather. 2023 onwards, the EV can also be equipped with Multipro Tailgate Audio System by Kicker, which adds weatherproof speakers in the flatbed.

  • D-ring recovery hooks in tech bronze.
  • Soft/hard roll-up tonneau cover.
  • Front off-road auxiliary lights.
  • Camping tent.
  • 18-inch 8-spoke tech bronze wheels.
  • Off-road recovery kit.
  • Dual bed-mounted vertical spare-tire carrier.
  • All weather eTrunk with vertical cargo net.
  • Sky convertible top.

Interior

Ample digital real estate

Taking center stage in the cabin are the two massive screens. For starters, the 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system displays a wealth of information. The EV is available with Ultravision, which allows seeing up to 18 camera views on the touchscreen. This includes the front and rear underbody cameras with a washer function and replaceable lens in case it breaks during daring off-road adventures.

The 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment displays comprehensive off-road information, including pitch and roll angles, wheel travel, g-force articulation, drift gauge, chassis ride height, etc. The 12.3-inch digital cockpit in the driver’s view provides essential information to the driver, including vehicle performance, off-road statistics, driver awareness, and trail mapping projection from the myGMC app.

Lunar Shadow/Horizon Interior – Updated for MY2023

In the current Hummer EV Pickup, the Lunar Horizon color scheme comes standard. This is a combination of Light Gray and Jet Black, along with Tech Bronze accents. In the 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup, there’s a new Lunar Shadow color scheme option, which is comparatively subdued and subtler. It’s a mix of Taupe and Jet Black colors, but like in Lunar Horizon, Tech Bronze accents complement the main colors.

GMC has showcased its American heritage by offering a moon-themed interior with the topographical map of the moon on the EV’s floor and speaker grilles. The speaker graphics showcase the Sea of Tranquility and Neil Armstrong’s footprint symbolizing mankind’s first step on the moon. No customer actually needs this feature, but something that proud American customers would buy from their hearts.

Unlike in many modern EVs, there are physical buttons on the three-spoke steering for cruise control, select ADAS functions, and navigating through the digital cockpits menu. More buttons are under the touchscreen for functions like diff lock and traction control. Drive modes can be selected via a rotary knob on the center console.

Hummer EV Pickup Specifications

GMC’s Ultium propulsion system has been making headlines recently, and the Hummer EV Pickup is the first vehicle to enter production equipped with it. A 24-module double-stacked battery is an integral structural element of the chassis, improving the EV’s control and stability. Do note that we are talking about the Edition 1 trim here, which, according to test data GM filed with the EPA, has a usable battery pack capacity of 212.7 kWh. GMC claims that the 212.7 kWh battery pack delivers 329 miles of range on a single charge.

1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft

Brace for impact because the Hummer EV Pickup’s powertrain surpasses all old limits. The Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 comes with a tri-motor AWD set-up. Its e-motors produce 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft of wheel torque. Before getting misled by the torque figure, note that EVs generally have a drive reduction ratio of 8:1, which relates to torque multiplication at the wheel. The system torque of Hummer EV Pickup’s powertrain is 1,140 lb-ft.

With Edition 1 sold out, customers can only reserve the EV3X, EV2X, and EV2 variants now. The EV3X also comes with a tri-motor set-up, which produces 830 hp and an identical 11,500 lb-ft wheel torque. While Edition 1 does the 0-60 mph sprint in 3 seconds, the EV3X does it in 3.5 seconds. The EV2 and EV2X models have a dual-motor set-up with 625 hp and 7,400 lb-ft (925 lb-ft with 8:1 conversion). With 800 volt capacity and 350 kW DC fast charging, up to nearly 100 miles range can be recovered in just 10 minutes.

CrabWalk & 4 wheel steer

Standard on EV2X, EV3X, and Edition 1 models, features like CrabWalk and four-wheel-steering make the 218-inch long pickup as easily maneuverable as a compact SUV. The pickup has a turning radius of 37.1 feet (445.2 inches). For reference, a Toyota RAV4, 36 inches shorter in length at 180.9 inches, has a turning radius of 37.4 feet (448.8 inches). At slow speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, and at higher speeds, all wheels turn in the same direction.

Customers also get CrabWalk, a feature usually offered on heavy-duty construction machines like JCB excavators. This segment-first feature offers incredible maneuverability by making all wheels steer at the same angle, up to 10 degrees, at low speeds making the EV drive diagonally to get past tight sections of trails. Moreover, the adaptive air suspension (standard on EV2X and above) can raise ride height from 10.1 inches (standard) to 15.9 inches in Extract Mode to help the EV clear large obstacles like boulders.

Ultium Energy Recovery

Ultium Energy Recovery is a standard feature of Ultium-based EVs, including the Hummer EV Pickup. The energy recovery system repurposes the heat from the batteries, power electronics, and other propulsion components. It can reduce battery energy consumption for heating, and increases the range and the charging speed by maintaining the optimal battery temperature. It can also capture and use humidity from the cabin (including body heat from passengers) and outside the vehicle. Conversely, the heat pump is able to precool the propulsion system to enable the circa-3-second 0-60 mph acceleration capability in the “Watts to Freedom” mode.

Production & Sales

GM builds the GMC Hummer EV Pickup at Factory Zero, which it remodeled with a USD 2.2 billion investment to produce electric vehicles. This is the company’s first dedicated EV assembly plant. Formerly the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly Center, Factory Zero started rolling out Hummer EV Pickups for customer deliveries in December 2021. The upcoming GMC Sierra Denali Electric pickup truck and the Chevrolet Silverado Electric will also be manufactured at this facility.

It’s been nearly a year since GM started making the Hummer EV Pickup for customer deliveries. However, it hasn’t normalized the production volume, which could be because of a parts shortage. Between January and September 2022, the company delivered just 782 units of the electric truck in the U.S.

Price & Release Date

Reservations are full for Edition 1, which is the launch edition of the Hummer EV Pickup with the bells and whistles. Reservations for the other trims are on pause because of a production shortage. GM has more than 90,000 reservations for the Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV, Chair and CEO Mary Barra revealed during the Q3 2022 earnings conference call on October 25, 2022.

With so many toys to play with, customers have to cough up a significant amount for the Hummer EV Pickup. GM has hiked the prices of the electric truck because of “the increase in the price of commodity parts, technology, and logistics” by USD 4,655. The new prices apply to reservations made from June 18, 2022, onwards. The company will commit to the original prices for all the reservations placed until June 17, 2022. The latest and original Hummer EV Pickup prices mentioned below do not include taxes and destination and handling charges.

Hummer EV3X Pickup customers will get a step closer to receiving their deliveries soon. GM has said that existing reservation holders will be able to choose their desired options and packages for their Hummer EV3X Pickup this summer. Available options will include the Extreme Off-Road package, the Watts To Freedom (WTF) mode, and the 24-module battery pack that enables the WTF mode.

Hummer EV Pickup sold for sky-high prices at auctions

The GMC Hummer EV is among the most desirable electric trucks in the U.S., and the low production volume and long waiting times have made it more exclusive. Electrek reported on April 28, 2022, that a Hummer EV Pickup was sold for USD 255,000 during a dealer auction event in Texas. Another auction on Cars and Bids attracted a price of USD 260,420 for the Edition 1. Moreover, an auction on eBay reportedly had the EV sold for USD 225,000. The demand is such that customers are willing to pay more than double the MSRP.

TopElectricSUV says

The 2023 GMC Hummer EV Pickup is one of the most capable electric truck models available today. It’s not very efficient, but it surely is a testament to the fact that EVs can match and even outclass the most extreme internal combustion engine vehicles. Plus, it’s filled to the brim with performance, comfort, and convenience features that collectively make it an impressive full-size truck model.
