The GMC Hummer EV Pickup is one of the most capable passenger vehicles on the market today, and that makes it a great base for a camping rig. With that thought in mind, Bend, Oregon-based overland vehicle specialist EarthCruiser has released the GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser. Recently, I got a great opportunity to check out the electric camper truck in person and speak with EC Co-Founder Michelle Boltz to know all its details.
The GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser is simply a GMC Hummer EV Pickup with light customization work. It’s not a full conversion, as the base vehicle remains unmodified. EarthCruiser has given it a completely separate carbon-fiber upfit, which can be removed. The upfit includes its own 6 kWh battery pack to ensure self-sufficiency. 605-watt solar panels on the roof charge this battery pack.
The GMC Hummer EV Pickup can travel up to 381 miles on a full charge. Thus, if you want to travel to a place where the whole route doesn’t have an EV charger, you’re limited to destinations about 190 miles away.
As the GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser would be heavier, it’d have an even lower range. This means you’ll have to plan your camping trip to an even closer destination. Fortunately, the upfit solution does not draw power from the vehicle’s batteries, which helps to preserve its range. Boltz told me that the GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser can be used off the grid for about three to four days, depending on the load.
The GMC Hummer EV EarthCruiser comes with a pop-up roof and a full-size bed that sleeps two people. Its amenities include 120-volt and 12-volt power outlets, an under-seat refrigerator, an induction cooktop, a sink with a faucet, storage drawers and cabinets, an indoor and outdoor shower, and a flat-pack toilet.
The EarthCruiser upfit is well-equipped for cold winters, featuring a heating system suitable for low temperatures. It has a 12-volt hot water system so that you can enjoy a hot shower and a 400-watt electric air heater to keep yourself warm. The various functions of the upfit are managed through a C-Zone system, which comes with a panel consisting of regular buttons on the outside as well as a 7-inch touchscreen on the inside.
GMC and EarthCruiser say they expect the EarthCruiser upfit for the GMC Hummer EV to become available in 2024, but they haven’t given a more precise launch timeline or disclosed the pricing.
