Hon Hai Technology Group (HHTG) is intensifying its foray into the auto industry. Better known as Foxconn worldwide, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, that is synonymous with Apple products, has developed several electric vehicles, including the country’s first electric pickup, the Foxconn Model V. Here’s everything we know about the electric truck:
What is it?
The Foxconn Model V is a mid-size pickup comparable to the Ford Ranger, but it employs a pure-electric powertrain. The letter ‘V’ in the name stands for ‘Victory,’ Foxconn revealed at the world debut on October 18, 2022.
Design & Features
At first glance, the Foxconn electric truck lacks the wide and confident stance of a typical mid-size pickup truck. The ‘H-line’ headlights or the blanked-off upper grille don’t look very appealing in the photos, but could have a different appeal in flesh. The VW ID.-like diamond-pattern lights in a honeycomb pattern on the body-colored surface indicate the charging status with different colors, Chia-Yi Wu, Senior UX Engineer, Hon Hai Technology Group, revealed during her presentation of the model at the debut event. The vertical tail lights have graphics similar to the headlights, putting function over form.
The interior, with a clean design and a bright color scheme, is comparatively more interesting. An L-shaped panel integrates four displays, including three horizontal screens — two outboard units for the exterior mirror cameras and a central unit for driver information — and a portrait touchscreen infotainment system. You can view the electric pickup’s cockpit on Foxconn’s Facebook page.
The Model V likely sits on Foxconn’s MIH open-source platform. It is a dual-cab model with seats for five people. There’s no word on its length, width, or height, but we know that the wheelbase is 3,220 mm (126.7 in.). The load floor area is 1.5 m (59.1 in.) long, 1.45 m (57.1 in.) wide, and 0.5 m (19.7 in.) tall. There’s a small frunk, too, but Foxconn hasn’t revealed the volume. It can accommodate ten 28-inch suitcases, Wu said. There are multiple power sockets, USB connectors, and 110V and 12V AC power outlets in the bed, making it a useful companion at the job site.
Foxconn hasn’t disclosed the powertrain or battery pack of the Model V. The Taiwanese electric pickup takes 30 minutes for DC fast-charging from 20 to 80% SoC, and on a full charge, it can travel up to 420 km (261 miles). It offers a payload capacity of 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs.) and a towing capacity of 3,000 kg (6,614 lbs.).
According to a report Taipei Times published on October 19, 2022, Foxconn plans to manufacture the electric truck in the U.S. from 2024. Customer deliveries of the new electric mid-size pickup in the U.S. may begin the same year. We expect Foxconn to price it very competitively, from around USD 35,000.
The Foxconn Model V will likely be an electric truck that offers a smaller and low-cost alternative to the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado Electric. Despite the modest range, its biggest drawback, the Foxconn Model V might be right for customers who need a simple truck without interstate range or extreme capabilities.
