Tiny Japanese hatchbacks, vans, and trucks, known as ‘kei’ vehicles at their origin, remain a niche sight in the U.S. However, specialist importers have helped older models gain a loyal following in cities and enthusiast communities, including in states like Washington, Texas, and Hawaii.
In late 2025, President Donald Trump praised Japan’s smallest vehicles and directed his transportation officials to explore allowing their production in the U.S.
While the Daihatsu brand is absent in North America, the K-Vision, which we got to explore in Southeast Asia last week, demonstrates how the idea carries appeal not just in U.S. cities, but in global markets too.
Design

Like many tall-wagon kei cars, the Daihatsu K-Vision has a blocky exterior designed to maximize interior space within tightly constrained dimensions. Its squared-off headlamps and tail lamps, along with the vertical light strips at the front and reflectors at the rear corners of the bumpers, reinforce this boxy appearance.
At both ends, a gloss-black panel spans the width between the lamps and incorporates an illuminated, block-lettered Daihatsu wordmark. The rectangular lower grille is split by a broad, closed-off horizontal section that houses the license plate area in the center.


The K-Vision features sliding rear doors on both sides and aerodynamically optimized wheels with near-solid covers divided by four narrow diagonal cutouts, creating a four-blade, pinwheel-like design. The broad rear glass slopes forward and narrows toward the top.
Interior
The Daihatsu K-Vision features the company’s Miracle Open Door system, which integrates the B-pillars into the front and sliding rear doors. Opening both doors creates a wide, unobstructed aperture that improves ingress and egress and makes loading bulky items easier. The cabin has a flat floor and four seats.


The interior draws inspiration from a modern living space, and we noticed that this is particularly evident in the dashboard and door panels. The dashboard is arranged in horizontal layers and features a diagonally ribbed center section accentuated by warm gold ambient lighting.
The door panels echo this treatment with perforated vertical metallic inserts and similar backlighting. Seeing the cabin up close, we noticed several open storage areas, including a broad shelf beneath the dashboard, cupholders on both sides, and a lower center tray, all of which can easily translate to the production vehicle.
Specifications


Daihatsu has developed the K-Vision on its DNGA platform and equipped it with a new series-hybrid system that integrates the engine, electric motor, and power control unit into a compact package.
The K-Vision measures 3,395 mm (133.7 in.) in length, 1,475 mm (58.1 in.) in width, and 1,680 mm (66.1 in.) in height and has a 2,460 mm (96.9 in.) wheelbase. Its length, width, and wheelbase are identical to the current Move and Tanto kei cars, but its height is 10 mm (0.4 in.) taller than the former and 95 mm (3.7 in.) lower than the latter.
The series-hybrid system delivers an EV-like driving experience and improves fuel efficiency by more than 20% compared to a conventional internal-combustion engine coupled to a CVT. The K-Vision also features a 400-watt external power supply function that can provide electricity during emergencies for approximately four days.

For the U.S.
While we’d love to see fresh options for buyers stateside, the current administration’s emphasis on domestic production, the limited appeal of smaller vehicles in the American market, and the extensive re-engineering required to meet federal safety standards make the local launch of cars like the Daihatsu K-Vision and the Honda Super-N feel unlikely at this point, unless adjustments are made to the regulations.
