2022 Citroen C5 Aircross spied, to be available as a PHEV [Update]

The Citroen C5 Aircross SUV celebrated its fourth birthday in April 2021, and a facelift is in the works for its release this year. Recently, Worldscoop forum member Dan uploaded spy shots from the 2022 Citroen C5 Aircross road tests, revealing what’s in store.

Design & Features

The 2022 Citroen C5 Aircross will retain the funky yet assertive look at the front. In a video of the Citroen Ami Buggy concept on the YouTube channel ‘null,’ a reflection on its windshield shows what looks like a completely undisguised 2022 Citroen C5 parked in the back.

At the 9 minutes 26 seconds mark, we can get a clear look at the updated model’s new headlamps featuring two horizontal light guides that form a Y shape. The new design of the headlamp graphics is reminiscent of the C5 X. The front bumper is also new, and it features a silver skid plate. The radiator grille of the 2022 C5 Aircross seems to be new, too, as Citroen has fixed the double chevron logo at a lower height. A more assertive front-end could work in the Chinese market, which prefers more aggressive SUVs, with grilles and headlights that imply strength.

Citroen will likely offer the 2022 C5 Aircross with new alloy wheels in 17-inch, 18-inch, and 19-inch sizes for a new look to the sides. The rear-end looks the same for the most part, from the roof spoiler to the tailgate, fog lamps, bumper, and tailpipes. Expect new paint options as well.

The new C5 Aircross will have revised tail lamps with a new cluster that integrates a Y-shaped light guide inspired by the C5 X. The bumper in the rendering looks the same for the most part, except for the outer ends where horizontal reflectors replace the current model’s squarish fog lamps.

The interior of the 2022 C5 Aircross is likely to feature noticeable differences. A teaser video has revealed that Citroen has redesigned the center console of the C5 Aircross, and it looks like the C5 X was the inspiration for the new look. A button-type gear selector has likely replaced the unconventionally designed, slanted gear lever. The start-stop button has moved to the place where previously there was the Eco mode button. Plus, there’s likely a new drive mode selector.

Also new inside the 2022 C5 Aircross are slim rectangular central AC vents and a floating touchscreen infotainment system. The latter is wider, probably a 12-inch unit like in the C5 X, and it may pack new connectivity and entertainment features. It could be snappier with upgraded software. The fully digital instrument cluster may include new layouts, improved graphics, and additional functions. The new model may offer new trim and upholstery choices and some additional comfort features as well.

Citroen may take the opportunity of the mid-cycle refresh of the C5 Aircross to improve comfort and handling. There is a possibility that the company may launch an updated plug-in hybrid variant that is more efficient.

The C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid has a 1.6-litre turbo-four petrol mill working with an electric motor that lies inside an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The engine produces 133 kW (181 PS/178 bhp) and 300 Nm, while the motor, using a 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, generates 81 kW (110 PS/109 bhp) and 320 Nm. Together, they deliver a combined power of 165 kW (224 PS/221 bhp) and a combined torque of 360 Nm. A 0-100 km/h sprint takes 8.9 seconds, and the top speed is 225 km/h (140 mph).

In EV mode, the C5 Aircross PHEV can do 55 km/34 miles (WLTP) on a full charge and attain a top speed of 135 km/h (84 mph). A 3.7 kW onboard charger is standard, but a 7.4 kW onboard charger is available as an option. The mid-cycle refresh could improve and refine the performance of the plug-in hybrid SUV.

Plug-in Reminder

In October 2021, Citroen gave the C5 Aircross plug-in hybrid an OTA update where owners receive notification if they are not recharging their vehicles regularly. This new feature addresses the highly debated matter that PHEVs are polluting the environment instead of saving it because many customers don’t actually charge and drive in EV mode as intended.

Citroen expects that customers currently not taking advantage of the C5 Aircross Hybrid’s plug-in hybrid system by using it as an EV regularly will change their habit when they receive a ‘Plug-in Reminder’ on the touchscreen. Statistics show that only 55% of short journeys of less than 25 miles happen in EV mode, and only 52% of customers charge their vehicle once or twice every 62 miles. The infotainment system of the new C5 should have the Plug-in Reminders feature built into it from Day 1.

The on-board computer analyses journeys, battery charging status, and the number of times the driver has charged the vehicle. If the driver drives the vehicle without plugging it into a charger for 5-10 days, they receive a notification on its touchscreen. On not charging it for 30 days straight, the notification pops up twice a day when using the vehicle. The Plug-in Reminder feature is available only in France and the UK right now, but its availability will expand to more countries by April. The C5 X Plug-in Hybrid will also receive this feature.

PHEV Connect

Another new support solution Citroen has rolled out in the C5 Aircross is PHEV Connect. This feature is useful for fleet operators, and it can reduce their costs and CO2 emissions. It shares the information about vehicle usage with fleet managers, who can take any necessary action to influence driver behaviour. Fleet managers can track the percentage of use in electric and hybrid modes, charging frequency, fuel consumption (of the entire fleet and each vehicle), and plug-in times (of the entire fleet and each vehicle).

Release Date

The revised Citroen C5 Aircross will likely debut later today (12 January 2022) and go on sale shortly after. In addition to the existing rivals, it will compete with the Nissan Qashqai e-Power as well.
