Update: ‘New base variant in China’ sub-section added to ‘Specifications.’
BYD has launched three new EVs in Europe, and one of them is the Han EV. Europe is receiving the improved BYD Han EV that broke cover in May 2022, including a bigger battery and better range. Here’s everything we know about it so far:
Exterior
At the front, the new BYD Han EV doesn’t look visibly different from the original Han EV showcased in Europe in 2020. BYD has used a curvier bumper with C-shaped gloss black trim on the outer ends and a taller lower air intake. The company offers new alloy wheels for a new look on the sides. The rear looks noticeably different, mainly because of a slimmer full-width tail lamp with inverted outer ends. The updated model features a cleaner and sportier rear bumper, too.
In Norway, BYD offers the Han EV in Snow White, Space Black, Emperor Red, AI Blue, and Time Grey colors.
Interior & safety
The interior of the Han EV has witnessed a few changes from the time of launch. BYD has added a head-up display and improved the user interface of the central touchscreen. The seats are new at both front and rear and feature integrated headrests. Lastly, the stitching pattern on the seats is also unique. Light brown and dark brown are the interior color choices.
In Norway, a 360-degree camera system, head-up display, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charger, and heated leather steering wheel among others are part of the new Han EV’s standard equipment. On the safety front, the electric sedan includes front and rear parking sensors, Adaptive Cruise Control, Electronic Stability Control, Blind Spot Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, license plate recognition, lane departure control, etc.
Specifications
A twin-motor powertrain is standard in the Euro-spec BYD Han EV. The all-wheel drive layout produces 380 kW (509 hp) of system power and 700 Nm (516 lb.-ft.) of combined torque, and this powertrain allows accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds and achieving a top speed of 185 km/h (115 mph).
Packing an 85.4 kWh battery (Blade battery) pack, the improved Han EV can travel 521 km on a full charge as per WLTP. The E-segment electric sedan isn’t very capable on the charging front, as the highest charging power it supports is just 6.6 kW (AC)/120 kW (DC). A heat pump system is part of the standard equipment, which would be particularly useful in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark where the winter season tends to be long and extremely cold.

New base variant in China
According to an announcement dated October 10, 2025, from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, BYD has developed a new base variant (code-named ‘BYD7009BEV9’ by the government agency) of the new Han EV. It comes with one motor, tuned to produce 150 kW (201 hp). The current base variant of the new Han EV available in China also has a single motor, but it develops a healthy 180 kW (241 hp). We don’t see either of the variants arriving in Europe.
Deliveries
BYD Han EV deliveries in European markets, including Norway, will begin by December 2022. Norway is so far BYD’s only market for its passenger vehicles in Europe. The Tang EV is its only product in the country, and it has sold nearly 2,500 units of the same as of August 26, 2022. The company will enter the UK, Sweden, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands in the coming months. In Germany, BYD has announced a pre-sale price of EUR 72,000 for the Han EV.
BYD doesn’t have a current plan to launch cars in the U.S., but one famous American has a vested interest. Warren Buffett, the world’s fifth-richest person, invested USD 232 million in BYD through Berkshire Hathaway in late 2008. By late 2018, the value of his investment rose to a whopping USD 1.6 billion. The growth continued further, and by August 2022 (via Reuters), Buffett’s company held BYD shares worth $7.5 billion!
TopElectricSUV says
The Han EV comes with a long-lasting LFP battery pack, a high-performance powertrain, and loads of features while undercutting the Tesla Model S, the current benchmark, by tens of thousands of euros. Due to its relative unknown status and the ruthless competition in Europe, the Chinese company will require persistence to gain market share. BYD should remain on its toes as Mercedes (EQE, EQE AMG), Audi (A6 e-tron), and BMW (i5) are poised to dominate the premium electric sedan segment by 2024.
