The BMW X5 has almost forever been the brand’s best-selling vehicle in the United States. Last year, the company shifted a little over 72,000 units, with a flat year-over-year sales. The local operations will no doubt be waiting for the next-gen BMW X5, codenamed G65, which will propel it into its fifth generation, to hopefully reach a new level of sales for BMW’s midsize luxury SUV.
Here’s everything we know about the next-gen BMW X5 Hybrid, expected to be a MY2027 vehicle in the U.S.:
Design
Analyzing recent prototypes, it’s evident that BMW is taking an evolutionary approach to the X5’s design, refining the shape rather than dramatically changing it.

As seen in the spy shots embedded to this story, the front-end styling draws inspiration from the futuristic Neue Klasse X concept, which I got to see last year. One unique feature confirmed by insiders is the integration of an “X” graphic within the headlights. The top-spec model will ride on 22-inch wheels, offering a robust presence.
Interior
Inside, the G65 BMW X5 departs from the BMW Curved Display seen in recent models. Designers appear to have reverted to a separate digital instrument cluster alongside a floating central infotainment display. This setup will either debut or run BMW’s Operating System X, the automaker’s next-generation interface promising improved functionality and intuitive operation.
We also understand from information shared on Bimmerpost forum that the ‘Ceremonial Light Carpet,’ which may refer to a lighting system that welcomes the driver in a distinct way, and a passenger-side screen, similar to those in smaller luxury models like the new Audi Q5, are part of the new X5’s cabin.

In terms of dimensions, the 2026 X5 will surpass five meters in length for the first time globally. Until now, only the China-exclusive long-wheelbase variant exceeded this length. The added space primarily accommodates a large battery pack planned for BMW’s first-ever fully-electric X5 variant, the iX5 BEV.
Specifications
Mild Hybrid
The engine lineup for the next-gen BMW X5 looks to remain comprehensive, as reported by Autocar UK. The X5 xDrive40i is expected to employ the refined 3.0-liter gasoline engine paired with mild-hybrid technology for improved fuel efficiency. There has been no confirmation of an sDrive40i variant, suggesting BMW might exclusively offer xDrive configurations. For markets outside the U.S., BMW is expected to introduce the xDrive40d, powered by a 3.0-liter diesel engine with mild-hybrid assistance.
Plug-in Hybrid
Plug-in hybrid technology is set to expand further with the X5 M60e, pairing a potent 3.0-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor specifically targeted at European buyers. A lower X5 xDrive50e is also rumored, combining BMW’s 3.0-liter gasoline engine with an entirely new electric motor, promising improved performance and range.
Electric & Fuel Cell

Looking further ahead, BMW has plans for a high-performance, fully-electric iX5 M Performance variant in 2027, delivering over 600 horsepower from its twin-motor setup. Moreover, an X5 Hydrogen variant featuring Toyota’s third-gen fuel cell system is scheduled for 2028, further expanding BMW’s sustainability efforts.
Price & Release Date
We expect the next-gen BMW X5 to arrive at U.S. dealerships in the second half of 2026 as a MY2027 vehicle. Prices are anticipated to start around $68,000. BMWBlog reported last year that production of the new X5 is set to begin in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in August 2026. It will compete with the refreshed Mercedes GLE PHEV, the recently-updated Volvo XC90 PHEV, the next-gen Audi Q7, and the Lexus RX Plug-in Hybrid.
