The 4 Series Convertible has a few years left in the tank, but BMW is already developing a similarly sized and technically advanced all-electric alternative under the i4 nameplate. Codenamed ‘NA3,’ the BMW i4 Convertible will be the brand’s first drop-top EV.
Here’s everything we know and expect from the BMW i4 Convertible:
Design
Road testing of the BMW i4 Convertible has commenced in Europe, with prototypes spotted near the company’s R&D center in Munich, Germany. BMW appears to be testing prototypes directly with the production body, so this future model is not way off in the distance.
The BMW i4 Convertible will be one of the ‘niche’ Neue Klasse EVs and, as we’ve depicted in our exclusive renderings, sports a design similar to that of the second-generation i3 Sedan at the front. The EV’s faux kidney grille and the headlights will likely be merged into a light signature.

A pair of slightly outward-slanting daytime running lights should make the car immediately recognizable as a Neue Klasse BMW EV from a distance. Dual rectangular air intakes in the lower section of the bumper and a low and sculpted hood should give the car sporty styling.
On the sides, we expect powerfully shaped wheel arches and clean bodywork with minimal character lines. A choice of chrome and gloss black trim to accentuate the i4 Convertible’s low waistline should be available. The configurator should offer several wheel options in 19-, 20-, and 21-inch sizes.
At the rear, we expect a short decklid, wide taillights with a slim form factor, and a diffuser-look bumper. The reversing light should be located in the center of the lower section of the bumper. BMW plans to use an electrically folding fabric roof to keep the weight down.
Interior

The interior of the BMW i4 Convertible should have a futuristic design that largely mirrors that of the new i3 Sedan. The dashboard will likely have a flattish upper section and a protruding central section, with the latter’s lines flowing into the front door panels.
The absence of an instrument cluster should give the upper part of the dashboard a clean and harmonious appearance. The key driving information will likely instead be projected on the driver’s side of the lower section of the windshield as part of the BMW Panoramic Vision.
A conventional 3D head-up display that projects the driving information, navigation instructions, and ADAS information directly into the driver’s line of sight should be available as an option.

A floating 17.9-inch parallelogram-shaped touchscreen infotainment system will likely be attached to the center of the dashboard.
A three-zone automatic climate control system will likely be standard. Front seats with a seven-program massage function and a heating or ventilation function depending on the market will likely be available as an option.
Specifications
BMW could offer the i4 Convertible in a single-motor RWD variant and two dual-motor AWD variants.

At least one of the two dual-motor AWD variants should have a maximum power of 463 hp and a maximum torque of 476 lb-ft, and a 108.7 kWh battery pack delivering an EPA-estimated range of over 400 miles.
The i4 Convertible will likely accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph. A BMW iM4 Convertible with a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of under 3.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph could follow within a couple of years.
Price & Release Date
According to a report BMW Blog published on July 24, 2026, BMW will launch the i4 Convertible in 2028. The U.S. could be among the first markets to get the electric convertible, though official confirmation is pending.

BMW plans to continue manufacturing the gas-powered 4 Series Convertible until mid-2029, as per the report. This means that the electric and gas convertible models should sell side by side until around early 2030. The two-door i4 Coupe (codename: NA2) is also expected to debut in 2028.
