First Look Review: VW ID. Cross previews future model, resets design direction

The VW ID. Cross Concept previews not just the upcoming ID.2-based SUV, but also shows where the brand plans to take its exterior and interior design.

We got to experience the near-production concept for the first time, and here’s everything that we observed.

Design

The ID. Cross Concept introduces Volkswagen’s new “Pure Positive” design language. Up front, the concept debuts a new Volkswagen face built around IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlamps with a three-dimensional lighting effect. The headlamps connect into a wide LED light strip with an illuminated VW logo in the center.

From the side, Volkswagen generates a floating roof effect using gloss black trim. The C-pillar has a shape that harks back to the older Golf and the VW Bus. We spotted louvers in the C-pillar, the outer edges of which illuminate at night.

The 21-inch alloys are named Balboa and are wrapped in Goodyear 235/40 R21 tires created for the concept. The charging flap is located on the passenger side above the front right wheel arch.

At the rear, a glass-covered LED strip spans the width, with 3D-look twin tail light clusters at the corners, completed with an illuminated VW logo. A diffuser-style element is present on the rear valance in Nature Black, paired with Golden Dusk trim.

Interior

Inside, the concept uses fabric-covered surfaces, ambient lighting, and a light beige interior theme called Vanilla Chai. The cockpit uses an 11-inch digital instrument display and a 13-inch infotainment screen, aligned on the same visual axis.

A smartphone interaction feature called “calm status” activates when the phone sits face-down in the inductive charging mat, and the screens reduce to essential information. Volkswagen also builds in a “Relax mode” where the seats fold down into a reclining area inspired by the VW Bus.

Specifications

The ID. Cross Concept also offers a fair idea of the spec sheet of the future entry-level crossover.

It is based on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive and a 155 kW (211 PS/208 hp) motor. WLTP range is up to 420 km (261 miles) and top speed is 175 km/h (109 mph).

Dimensions are 4,161 mm long (13.7 ft), 1,839 mm wide (6.0 ft), and 1,588 mm tall (5.2 ft), with a 2,601 mm wheelbase (8.5 ft). Cargo volume is 450 L (15.9 cu ft) plus a 25 L (0.9 cu ft) frunk. Trailer rating is up to 1,200 kg (2,646 lb) braked. The vehicle is hoisted on 235/40 R21 tires.

Pricing & Production

Production of the VW ID.2 SUV and its platform-mate, the Skoda Epiq, has been assigned to the Volkswagen Navarra plant in Pamplona, Spain. As for pricing, we expect the model to come in at around GBP 25,000 (USD 33,755) when it hits the market later this year.
