We got to see the Mercedes GLC Electric at the Japan Mobility Show, where it made one of its first public appearances, following its IAA 2025 world premiere (Munich) in September.
The display model was the top-spec 400 4MATIC specification. While the company won’t comment, Mercedes should release lower variants within a couple of years to make the GLC EV even more accessible.
The example brought to the show revealed the new proportions, new grille design, a brand-new interior, and fine detailing, offering a glimpse of what U.S. buyers can expect when it launches there in the second half of 2026.
Design

The GLC Electric introduces the brand’s redefined illuminated grille, surrounded by a wide chrome frame and 942 backlit points. The retro-inspired lighting signature flows into the slender Digital Light headlamps, leading the GLC into the future while also retaining the Mercedes identity.
The SUV’s profile, thankfully without the pebble-shaped silhouette, looks sleek and confident, with pronounced wheel arches housing wheels. At the rear, the animated star-pattern taillights link to a small spoiler, making the GLC seem a little wider than it actually is.
Interior & Features

Inside, the GLC Electric gets the 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, stretching across the dash and complemented by soft ambient lighting. The optional Sky Control panoramic roof with switchable transparency is another highlight, transforming the cabin into a calm, illuminated space at night.
Mercedes will offer the world’s first Vegan Package, certified by The Vegan Society, which replaces all animal-based materials with premium alternatives across surfaces.

The SUV’s fourth-generation MBUX system runs on the new MB.OS operating system, which is a new AI-driven platform capable of 254 trillion operations per second. It supports over-the-air updates and offers a natural-language virtual assistant powered by Microsoft and Google AI. The system can handle multiple tasks at once, from adjusting cabin temperature to suggesting nearby restaurants.
Performance

The launch model, GLC 400 4MATIC, combines dual motors and an 800-volt system, producing 483 hp and up to 443 miles (WLTP est.) of range. Mercedes claims up to 188 miles of range can be recharged in 10 minutes using DC fast charging (up to 330 kW).
The standard One-Box braking system is designed particularly to offer consistent pedal feel during regenerative braking, while optional AIRMATIC air suspension and rear-axle steering should improve agility as well as comfort.
U.S. Launch

Mercedes-Benz has already announced that it will introduce the GLC Electric in the U.S. during the second half of 2026, positioned below the EQE SUV. Production will take place at the company’s Bremen plant in Germany, and it will compete squarely with the BMW iX3, which is due next summer.
Can Mercedes price the GLC Electric below USD 55,000 and undercut BMW’s advantage?
