The Mercedes CLA Electric is vying to become the new long-distance king, delivering an incredible range along with the company’s next-gen design, connectivity, entertainment solutions, and electrical platform. The new electric sedan is yet to arrive at U.S. dealers, but we got an early look at it at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. Here’s what all we found out from our experience:
Exterior

The Mercedes CLA Electric introduces the three-pointed star’s new design direction for compact models. Its fastback silhouette, long hood with power domes, and muscular GT-style rear create a familiar, yet desirable look.
The front fascia features a shark-nose profile with a fully illuminated star panel comprising 142 LED stars and a central illuminated emblem. The star-shaped headlights connect via a continuous light band.
The CLA Electric is the first Mercedes-Benz in 90 years to feature a front trunk, offering 2.5 cu. ft. of space, enough to keep a gym bag, a small trolley bag, or a charging cable.
Aerodynamically optimized surfaces and flush elements contribute to a class-leading 0.21 drag coefficient. A standard panoramic glass roof stretches to the rear. The illuminated taillight band, frameless doors, and 17- to 19-inch wheels further enhance the car’s appearance.
Interior

The CLA Electric’s interior focuses on three main elements: the MBUX Superscreen, the floating center console, and wraparound door panels. The MBUX Superscreen integrates a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central touchscreen, and a 14-inch passenger display under a single glass surface.
The Unity Game Engine powers real-time graphics, while the new MB.OS system enables over-the-air updates and AI-enhanced control.
The cabin’s floating console incorporates storage, cupholders, and an optional wireless charger. The doors are finished with tubular handles and open storage areas. Also available are a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos and 64-color ambient lighting.
Our experience in the Mercedes CLA Electric

Standing at 5’7″, I didn’t find getting into and out of the 2026 Mercedes CLA Electric difficult despite its low stance. The driving position felt sporty, and the snug cabin reinforced that impression. I had adequate legroom and good headroom, though rear visibility was limited due to the coupe-like roofline.
The experience changed once I moved to the back. Entering the rear seat immediately highlighted how tight the space was. Headroom was minimal, and legroom felt even more restricted. It was evident that taller passengers would find it cramped, making the rear seat better suited for shorter journeys or smaller occupants.
Specifications

Based on the MMA mixed-energy platform, the Mercedes CLA Electric is 185.9 in long, 73 in wide, and 57.8 in tall. While it is larger than the Tesla Model 3 in every dimension, its wheelbase, spanning 109.8 in., is 3.4 in. shorter.
Variants
U.S. buyers will get a choice of two variants – the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and the CLA 350 4MATIC with EQ Technology.
The CLA 250+ employs a rear-mounted permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) producing 268 hp and 247 lb.-ft. of torque, sufficient to reach 0-60 mph in an estimated 6.6 seconds and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph.
The rear motor features a two-speed transmission for efficient power delivery. A multi-source heat pump for cabin conditioning and an intelligent braking system allowing up to 200 kW of energy recuperation are also among the highlights of the CLA Electric.
The CLA 350 4MATIC adds a front-mounted second PSM, leading to 349 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, cutting the acceleration time to an estimated 4.8 seconds while keeping the top speed unchanged.
Battery, Charging & Range
Both variants feature an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery with high energy density NMC cells. Operating at 800 volts, double the normal voltage, it supports charging rates up to 320 kW. At a compatible ultra-fast charging station, customers can charge it from 10 to 80% in as little as 22 minutes.
Mercedes-Benz is projecting an EPA-est. range of over 400 miles for the CLA 250+, while the CLA 350 4MATIC could deliver an EPA-est. range of over 375 miles.
