First Look: Toyota’s GR GT has the mettle to challenge 911 GT3, AMG GT

Introduced in December 2025, the GR GT is the first standalone car from Toyota’s motorsports brand, Gazoo Racing. We had the opportunity to check it out in person at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it had its dynamic world premiere.

Design

The GR GT has the unmistakable look of a Japanese supercar and comes as a welcome refresh at a time when many automakers are embracing unconventional designs. Its long, low, and wide body, combined with its aggressive styling, gives it a powerful, track-ready look.

The visibly long hood has sculpted surfaces and slopes gently. It features three air vents: a wide, centrally positioned scoop at the front and two narrower, elongated openings toward the rear. It is one of the GR GT’s most distinctive design elements.

A slim gloss-black panel covers the upper part of the front fascia. Below it, the sculpted bumper forms an X-shaped motif around the central air intake and two side inlets, all of which feature horizontal slats. The conventionally designed sleek headlamps feature slim DRLs.

Along the sides, the GR GT features tall vertical air outlets behind the front wheels, a compact two-seat cabin with a moderately raked windshield, sculpted rocker panels, and a short tail. It rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 265/35ZR20 (front)/325/30ZR20 (rear) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

The rear looks busy, with a highly technical, performance-focused design. The taillights span nearly the full width of the car, while the high-mounted stop lamp is integrated into the ducktail spoiler.

Large air outlets beneath the outer sections of the taillights help expel hot air. Farther down, the sculpted bumper forms an A-shaped motif around the centrally positioned license plate area and incorporates four exhaust outlets, two on each side, along with an aggressive diffuser.

Interior

The GR GT has a snug, driver-focused interior designed to provide clear outward visibility and easy access to key controls. Although the cabin looks clean and modern, it avoids the overly minimalist approach that has become a trend in the industry in recent years.

Gazoo Racing will likely offer a choice of red-black dual-tone and all-black interiors in the GR GT.

The dashboard has a flat upper surface and broad vertical air vents at its outer edges. Each vent features two trapezoidal openings that resemble the exhaust outlets of a sports car. The layered dashboard tapers inward toward the center, giving it a substantial but not overly bulky appearance.

On the driver’s side, the dashboard integrates the engine start/stop button and several other frequently used controls. Two USB Type-C ports are positioned on the passenger side.

The freestanding infotainment touchscreen sits within a technical-looking housing featuring a row of physical switches underneath. Its upright, add-on appearance is somewhat reminiscent of custom pop-up multimedia displays found in Japanese sports cars during the 1990s and 2000s.

The GR GT features Recaro bucket seats with integrated headrests and pronounced side bolsters.

The flat-bottomed steering wheel has an unusual oblong center pad. Its curved paddle shifters and rotary controls for traction and stability management, as well as the drive modes and boost function, reinforce the cockpit’s performance-focused character.

The center console houses an electronic gear selector, an electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function, and circular controls for functions including the hazard warning lights, engine stop-start system, parking camera, and hood release.

Specifications

The GR GT has an all-aluminum body frame, while its body panels make extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), plastic, and other lightweight materials to keep weight in check. The car measures 189.8 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and 47.0 inches tall, with a 107.3-inch wheelbase.

Gazoo Racing estimates the GR GT weighs 3,858 lbs. and states a 45:55 front/rear weight distribution. The company equips the car with a hybrid powertrain comprising a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, an electric motor, and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Final outputs are pending, but Gazoo Racing expects the system power and system torque to be at least 641 hp and no less than 627 lb-ft, respectively. The hybrid powertrain sends drive to the rear wheels and allows the car to achieve an estimated top speed of at least 199 mph.

Release Date & Pricing

Gazoo Racing says it will launch the GR GT around 2027, without giving a specific timeline for the U.S. Prices could start at around USD 300,000. The GR GT will likely compete with the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro 4MATIC+.
