First Look: Ford Ranger MS-RT PHEV takes electrification to the street truck idea

The Ford Ranger MS-RT, originally launched in Europe with a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, is now also available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The MS-RT trim aims to endow the midsize pickup with better on-road handling and sportier styling.

Shortly after the standard Ranger Plug-in Hybrid facelift, we had a chance to check out the new Ford Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid in person recently, and here are some observations we made:

Design

The exclusive grille offer a much cleaner look than the standard model and suits the pickup’s plug-in hybrid setup better.

The Ford Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid’s exterior borrows cues from the extreme Ranger racing trucks. A bespoke suspension with firmer dampers at the front and a retuned rear setup reduces the ride height by 40 mm (1.6 in.), giving the road-focused pickup its quintessential lower stance.

A 40 mm (1.6 in.) increased track width, combined with flared wheel arches, makes the Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid 82 mm (3.2 in.) wider than the standard truck. The noticeably wider body complements the lower stance, while also improving grip and stability.

At the front, the Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid sports wider upper and lower grilles, both featuring a honeycomb pattern, a gloss black upper grille appliqué featuring the MS-RT badge, an exclusive bumper with an integrated splitter, and side air vents with two horizontal slats.

Larger, 21-inch satin black wheels wrapped in low‑profile 275/45 R21 tires and Agate black door handles and mirror caps continue the exclusive styling on the sides.

At the rear, the ducktail spoiler serves as a key styling differentiator, with MS-RT branding on the tailgate and the bumper step and a faux rear diffuser completing the special look.

Interior

Inside, the Ford Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid features sports seats with bucket-style bolsters, blue contrast stitching, and illuminated MS-RT badges that are part of the welcome sequence. The floor mats also have similar LED badges.

Another exclusive feature in the Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid is a sculpted sports steering wheel, featuring a blue 12 o’clock marker and a heating function.

Ford equips the road-focused midsize pickup with features like a dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12-inch SYNC 4A touchscreen infotainment system, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, and Intelligent Speed Limiter as well.

Specifications

The Ford Ranger MS-RT Plug-in Hybrid combines a 2.3-liter turbocharged gas engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission with a 75 kW (101 hp) electric motor and an 11.8 kWh (net) battery pack. Ford installs the electric motor between the engine and transmission, and the traction battery pack between specially developed frame rails.

The plug-in hybrid system gives the midsize pickup truck 207 kW (278 hp) of combined power and 697 Nm (514 lb.-ft.) of combined torque.

With the front seat set for a six-footer, rear knee room is tight in the Ranger, and my knees brush the seatback. The backrest is fixed, but headroom is acceptable and the tall windows help the cabin feel airy.

Packing 207 kW (278 hp) of combined power and 697 Nm (514 lb.-ft.) of combined torque, the midsize plug-in hybrid pickup can haul up to 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lb.) and tow up to 3,500 kg (7,716.1 lb). It delivers a pure-electric range of 40 km (24.8 miles), as per WLTP.
