First Look Review: Current Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 PHEV before it’s replaced

Mercedes has opened order books for the refreshed GLE in global markets, signaling that it’s a matter of time before every variant of the current lineup is phased out.

We had a chance to take one last look at the outgoing model in a plug-in hybrid AMG variant (GLE 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+) during our travels to Southeast Asia recently. Here are our observations on its styling, comfort, quality, and other key aspects.

Design

Mercedes GLE front three quarter

The GLE has a distinctive identity within the Mercedes-Benz SUV line-up, with signature styling elements carried across four generations over nearly three decades.

The angled, forward-leaning C-pillar and the seamless transition from the rear quarter glass to the rear windscreen, creating a wrap-around effect, are central to this consistency.

At the front, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 features an upright radiator grille with vertical chromed strips, curvy headlamps, large side air inlets with two horizontal fins, an A-shaped lower air intake, and a muscular bumper.

Mercedes GLE side
A low ground clearance and available 22-inch forged wheels wrapped in 285/40 R22 tires at the front and 325/35 R22 tires at the rear inject the GLE with plenty of sportiness.

The design of some of these elements varies depending on the equipment line, though, and this applies to other angles as well.

On the sides, aluminum-look running boards, body-colored bumpers, and gloss black mirrors are among the highlights. A lowered suspension and 22-inch AMG forged cross-spoke alloy wheels in a matt black finish give the model a sporty appearance.

Mercedes GLE rear three quarter

The rear of the GLE is only slightly raked and integrates horizontal combination lamps. Chromed twin tailpipes on each side and a diffuser strip communicate that this is an AMG variant.

Interior

The GLE is big on everyday practicality, with clearly laid-out buttons, switches, and rotary dials evident across the cabin. The instrument cluster and infotainment system have been positioned together behind a continuous glass surface.

The wide center console has been positioned high, and it features a grab handle on each side, mimicking the styling of off-roaders. It integrates a touchpad, the gear selector, and physical controls for various functions such as speaker volume, parking camera, navigation, and drive modes.

Experience in the Mercedes GLE

At 5’7″ (170 cm), ingress into the plug-in hybrid SUV is straightforward, both at the front and rear. The front seats provide good back, shoulder, and under-thigh support, making them suitable for longer journeys. Headroom measures about 7 inches, while forward, side, and rear visibility remain strong for a vehicle of this size.

The cabin uses high-quality materials, with chrome accents, piano black surfaces, and carbon-fiber trim on the dashboard. The switches for comfort functions feel tactile and well-damped in operation. The AC vents feature metallic-finished louvers with precise adjustment. The steering wheel is compact, with a thick rim and a secure, reassuring grip.

In the rear, the headroom stands at about 5.5 inches, and the under-thigh support is also adequate. Legroom and knee room are generous, allowing comfortable seating for adults. The center seat remains usable, as the transmission tunnel is not excessively high.

Rear passengers get two USB Type-C ports and a small storage space for a smartphone at the back of the center console. The fold-out center armrest includes two cupholders.

The cabin also features two seatback pockets and four AC vents, with two integrated into the B-pillars and two positioned at the rear of the center console.
