First Look Review: U.S.-bound BMW iX3 signals Germany’s electric resurgence

The new BMW iX3 is a pivotal model in the German automaker’s shift to EVs. It debuts a new design language, cutting-edge technologies, and some of the most competitive specifications for this segment in Europe.

While its U.S. launch is still about a year away, we had the chance to experience its design, comfort, and features at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show.

Design

The iX3 is the first production Neue Klasse model and sets the stage for BMW’s next era. It measures 188.3 inches long, 74.6 inches wide, and 64.4 inches tall, with a 114.1-inch wheelbase. Its proportions are typical of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle, with a two-box stance and a strong focus on aerodynamics. A drag coefficient of 0.24 places it among the most efficient SUVs in its class.

Up front, the upright fascia integrates vertically arranged kidney grilles and a new four-eyed light signature. A horizontal light strip replaces chrome trim, while optional illuminated kidneys enhance its night presence. The sculpted hood embeds the BMW roundel in a central “valley.”

From the side, flush door handles, body-colored arches, and slim glazing create a clean profile. At the rear, horizontal tail lamps with layered elements form a modern interpretation of BMW’s L-shape, paired with an integrated roof spoiler. Large 22-inch alloy wheels complete the look, adding to the SUV’s powerful stance.

Interior

Inside, BMW emphasizes space, minimalism, and digital focus. The flat floor and wide dimensions deliver generous cabin room for five passengers. Cargo capacity stands at 30.4 cu. ft., expandable to 65 cu. ft. with the rear seats folded, plus a 2 cu. ft. front trunk. A towing capacity of 4,400 lbs. is also available.

The cockpit introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, combining a 17.9-inch Central Display, Panoramic Vision projection, multifunction steering wheel, and optional 3D Head-Up Display. Key driving information projects across the lower windshield for better visibility.

Other notable features include wireless charging, USB-C ports, a Harman Kardon 13-speaker system, and an optional panoramic moonroof with solar filtering.

BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant is redesigned with natural voice recognition, proactive suggestions, and routine automation. Over-the-air software updates expand functionality, while apps such as YouTube, Disney+, and AirConsole gaming broaden in-car entertainment.

Our experience in the new BMW iX3

At 5’7″, I found getting into the new BMW iX3 effortless. The seat height felt ideal, and ingress and egress were smooth. In the driver’s seat, I noticed the headroom in the front was generous, making it perfect for tall adults. The driver’s seat offered good back and under-thigh support, and visibility was excellent in all directions, including a clear view out the rear window.

In the back, I found the seat quite comfortable, even though it isn’t reclinable. I had about five inches of headroom, and both legroom and knee room were ample. The under-thigh support was also good, making the rear suitable for longer journeys. BMW includes thoughtful amenities such as two USB-C charging ports, rear air vents, and a fold-out central armrest with dual cup holders.

Specifications

Platform & Variants

Unlike the BMW iX1 or the iX2 which we experienced last year, the next-gen BMW iX3 debuts an all-new dedicated EV platform, engineered for RWD and AWD applications. A 50 xDrive dual-motor AWD variant will be the only choice at launch in summer 2026 and an additional dual-motor AWD variant and also a single-motor RWD variant are scheduled to follow in early 2027.

The iX3 50 xDrive, pairs a rear Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor with a front Asynchronous Motor, producing a combined 463 hp and 476 lb.-ft. of torque. It accelerates from 0-60 mph in about 4.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 130 mph.

Battery & Range

A structural battery pack with an energy storage capacity of 108.7 kWh (net) and a high operating voltage of 698.9 volts is standard in the iX3 50 xDrive. Inside this high-voltage battery pack are BMW’s sixth-generation, cylindrical cells with a 20% higher energy density, integrated without a module. In tests BMW conducted based on EPA’s method, the iX3 delivered a range of up to 400 miles.

Charging

The sixth-generation cells bring a 30% improvement in charging speed. With a peak charging power of 400 kW, BMW estimates the iX3 can gain around 175 miles of range in 10 minutes. A 10-80% charge takes just 21 minutes on DC fast charging. Home charging is supported up to 19.2 kW AC. Bidirectional charging is included, enabling Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home, and Vehicle-to-Grid functions.

BMW equips the iX3 with a new electronic architecture featuring four high-performance computers, or “superbrains.” These manage drivetrain control, driver assistance, infotainment, and comfort functions.

Price & Release Date

Production of the U.S.-spec BMW iX3 will commence at the BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary in Q1 2026 (January-March 2026), with deliveries scheduled to commence in Summer 2026 (June-August 2026). The electric midsize luxury SUV’s prices will start at around USD 60,000.
