First Look Review: 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid maintains its sporty edge

The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has no changes to the design, interior or the specifications, yet it feels fresh in person. For 2026, the model introduces a new Nightshade Edition based on the XSE grade with blacked-out cosmetic updates both inside and out.

We had the opportunity to experience the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid XSE Premium in the Wind Chill Pearl color, and here are our observations.

Design

The Nightshade Edition model, new for 2026, is based on the XSE trim. It adds black exterior accents, including black badging, door sills, door handles, and bumper trim. The Nightshade Edition also features exclusive 19-inch black-finished alloy wheels as well as an exclusive Karashi yellow option, which we’ve reviewed in the 2026 Prius Hybrid.

Viewed from the front, the 2026 Prius uses a low-mounted front fascia with a narrow upper grille and an integrated lower air intake. Slim LED headlamps are positioned high on the front corners and incorporate daytime running light signatures.

Moving to the side, the Prius retains the low-slung exterior proportions with a coupe-influenced roofline and wide rear stance. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches on SE models to 19 inches on XSE, XSE Premium, and Nightshade grades.

At the rear, the design emphasizes width through a full-width LED light bar connecting the taillamps. The rear glass is steeply raked and transitions into an integrated spoiler. Color options include the exclusive Karashi on the Nightshade Edition, along with Wind Chill Pearl and Midnight Black, while all other trims get six different options.

Interior

There are no design or equipment changes to the interior of the 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The new Nightshade Edition is finished in black surfaces, with black and gray stitching on SofTex-trimmed front seats combined with black accents on door sills and door handles, with the dashboard getting a carbon-fiber finish.

The cabin layout features a 7-inch digital gauge cluster positioned forward, while infotainment is handled by an 8-inch touchscreen on SE, XSE, and Nightshade Edition grades and a 12.3-inch touchscreen standard on XSE Premium and available on XSE and Nightshade Edition trims, all of which come with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard.

All grades include six USB-C ports, with wireless Qi charging standard on all but the base SE trim. A fixed glass roof is available as an option on XSE and Nightshade Edition trims, which the XSE Premium, shown in this article, gets as standard.

Seating materials vary by grade, with fabric upholstery on SE models and SofTex-trimmed seating on XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium. Front seats provide heating on all grades except SE, while XSE Premium adds ventilated front seats and driver seat memory. Optional features include Panoramic View Monitor, Digital Rearview Mirror, and Advanced Park on XSE Premium.

Specifications

Like the design and interior, there are no technical changes to the Prius Plug-in Hybrid for the 2026 model year. It continues with a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery carrying a manufacturer-estimated 44-mile all-electric range in SE, while XSE and XSE Premium grades carry a manufacturer-estimated 39-mile all-electric range.

The powertrain pairs a 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine with two motor-generators through an electronically controlled CVT, with power routed to the front wheels. Total system output measures 220 horsepower with 139 lb-ft of torque. Toyota estimates a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid supports charging through a standard household outlet or Level 2 charging equipment, with a charge time of approximately four hours with the latter.
