First Look Review: 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid soldiers on with standard AWD

The 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid carries over from the 2025 model with no exterior or equipment changes. The entry-level LE trim and Nightshade edition have been dropped for the 2026 model year, and it receives standard AWD across the range with a slight bump in price.

We had the opportunity to experience a 2026 Limited AWD model in the Ruby Flare Pearl color to check if it still makes a compelling buy in 2026. Outlined below are our observations.

Design

The 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid continues with the model’s three-row layout. At the front, the Hybrid features a blue accent on the Toyota logo unlike the gas variant, and retains the large grille of the Toyota family.

Moving to the sides, the shoulder line creases over the wheels to give it a muscular and planted stance, which carries to the rear, which we think is the best angle of the Highlander, especially with the sculpted spoiler and slim taillights.

Wheel designs vary by grade, with XLE getting 18-inch wheels while the Limited and Platinum receive 20-inch alloy wheels.

Exterior equipment on higher trims includes power-folding heated mirrors with turn-signal indicators, black-painted grille elements, LED fog lights, and puddle lights with integrated Highlander branding. Additionally, the Platinum trim offers LED projector headlights with adaptive lighting and auto leveling.

Interior

The cabin seats seven as standard with second-row captain’s chairs. Hybrid XLE and Hybrid Limited offer an optional second-row bench for seating eight. Interior materials vary by grade, including SofTex-trimmed seating on Hybrid XLE and leather-trimmed seating on Hybrid Limited and Hybrid Platinum. Interior color options include black, graphite, and an exclusive glazed caramel color on Hybrid Platinum.

Standard equipment includes tri-zone climate control, Qi-compatible wireless charging, five USB ports, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and second-row sunshades. Toyota Audio Multimedia is standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, while a 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on Hybrid XLE and standard on Hybrid Limited and Hybrid Platinum.

Premium audio on Hybrid Limited and Hybrid Platinum uses an 11-speaker JBL system with a subwoofer and amplifier. The Platinum trim adds heated second-row captain’s chairs, Panoramic Glass Moonroof, Panoramic View Monitor, a 10-inch color head-up display, and illuminated front door scuff plates.

Specifications

The hybrid system combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two motor-generators. Net combined output is 243 hp with a rear electric motor that provides Electronic On-Demand AWD capability.

Hybrid models offer Normal, Eco, and Sport drive modes, plus an EV mode for low-speed electric operation over short distances. All hybrid grades have up to 3,500 lbs of towing capacity with a manufacturer-estimated 35 mpg combined for all hybrid grades. Cargo capacity reaches up to 84.3 cu ft with the second and third rows folded.
