First Look Review: 2026 Toyota Crown Nightshade Edition rocks a bolder styling

The 2026 Toyota Crown Hybrid continues as a hybrid-only, all-wheel-drive sedan positioned above the Camry. Compared to the 2025 model year, Toyota replaces the Supersonic Red with Finish Line Red, which is the only addition.

Comparing Toyota’s MY2025 and MY2026 official materials, we initially thought Smart Key System availability and the USB-C port count had changed. They didn’t.

The model remains available with two hybrid systems and four trims, with no changes to the design, features, or mechanicals. We spent some time with the Nightshade Edition finished in the Storm Cloud color and here are our observations.

Design

At the front, the 2026 Toyota Crown Hybrid continues to use Toyota’s lighting signature with slim LED daytime running lights. A wide grille and intake combo dominates the front, giving the car the aggression typical of a crossover.

Viewed from the side, the Crown features a liftback-style sedan profile with a raised ride height and coupe-influenced roofline. Wheel sizes remain grade-dependent, including 19-inch alloy wheels on XLE and Limited grades and 21-inch wheels on Nightshade and Platinum grades.

Moving to the rear, the Crown loses a lot of visual weight with the floating effect caused by the kink at the bottom edge of the C-pillar. A wide connected lightbar-style LED taillamp further gives the car a wide and planted look.

Shown in the model featured in this article, the Nightshade grade sports black exterior elements, including black badging, black mirror caps, black door handles, dark window trim, and matte-black wheels.

The Platinum grade continues to offer an optional two-tone exterior finish, with black extending across the roof and upper body sections. Exterior color availability varies by trim and includes Storm Cloud, Bronze Age, Heavy Metal, Finish Line Red, Oxygen White, and Black.

Interior

The interior layout remains unchanged for 2026, with all grades continuing to use a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen for infotainment running Toyota Audio Multimedia with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and five USB-C ports.

Leather-trimmed seating is standard across the lineup, with heated and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats included depending on grade. Interior color choices vary by grade and include Black, Macadamia, and Black with Chestnut accents.

Limited and Nightshade grades add a fixed panoramic moonroof. The Platinum grade includes a Head-Up Display, powered tilt-and-telescopic steering column, Panoramic View Monitor, and Advanced Park.

Specifications

As before, the 2026 Crown Hybrid is offered exclusively with all-wheel drive. XLE, Limited, and Nightshade grades use the Toyota Hybrid System pairing a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with front and rear electric motors.

This system produces a combined output of 236 hp with an EPA-estimated 41 mpg (combined) rating and uses an electronically controlled CVT with Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive.

The Platinum grade uses the Hybrid MAX system, combining a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with front and rear electric motors and a rear eAxle. Output is rated at 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.

Power is delivered through a direct-shift 6-speed automatic transmission with Full-Time Electronic All-Wheel Drive to achieve an estimated 30 mpg (combined).

The standard hybrid system records a 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds, while the Hybrid MAX system records the same in a time of 5.7 seconds. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across all trims.
