First Look Review: 2026 Subaru Solterra feels like a generational change

The 2026 Subaru Solterra EV is the biggest surprise among EV debuts this year, with a polarizing front end and significant updates focused on improved performance, range, and feature enrichment.

Recently, we got to spend some time with the facelifted Solterra, and here are our observations.

Design

While the overall shape remains unchanged in the 2026 Solterra, the details now feel more refined.

The 2026 Subaru Solterra looks more cohesive in person than the current model. The redesigned front fascia brings stronger presence, with chunky new headlamps featuring a triple-element DRL signature stacked above the main beams, a bigger badge, and reshaped lower intake.

The SUV’s profile gets a lift with newly styled wheels—available in 18 and 20 inches—and sleeker body-colored fenders in certain colors. At the rear, enhanced aerodynamics come courtesy of a new spoiler, badge, and gate garnish, creating a more sophisticated appearance.

Interior

Inside, the Solterra carries a revamped dashboard and center console. A large, low-mounted 14-inch touchscreen is the big change, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The dashboard is redesigned in a horizontal orientation with better looks and materials, and slim AC vents. The digital gauge cluster shifts to a standalone design, and metallic accents and ambient lighting further improve appeal.

The revised center console sees two 15 W wireless phone chargers in the location where the parking brake and drive selector controls are currently. The same has been moved backward which improves ergonomics.

Experience in the 2026 Solterra’s cabin

Stepping inside, the driving position is identical. The large windshield, wide windows, and well-shaped front and rear quarter panels offer excellent visibility.

The dashboard features a wide ambient light strip under the vents. The steering wheel is a flat-bottom “squircle” with standard plastic buttons for cruise control, lane assist, voice commands, and audio. The seats are soft and supportive, upholstered in synthetic leather, and are heated or ventilated. The new screen is large but doesn’t dominate the cabin, unlike in some GM EVs.

For someone 5’8″, rear seat comfort is solid, with a good recline angle and ample legroom. Under-thigh support is acceptable, though the floor could be an inch lower for better comfort. Headroom will feel tight for anyone around six feet tall. Rear passengers also benefit from USB-C charging ports.

Specifications

Subaru has significantly improved the Solterra’s powertrain 2026. The vehicle’s upgraded 74.7 kWh battery (up from 72.8 kWh) delivers more than 285 miles per charge, marking a 25% improvement over the current model. There’s no significant change in the charging time, with 10% to 80% SoC taking under 35 minutes with 150 kW capacity, further aided by a new battery preconditioning system. The 2026 model will have the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing access to Tesla’s expansive network of Superchargers.

Standard models produce 233 hp (up from 215 hp) through upgraded front and rear electric motors. The new top-spec XT trim enhances performance further, with dual motors combining to deliver 338 horsepower, enabling a 0-60 mph time under 5 seconds.

While the electrical system has seen changes, the vehicle retains its ruggedness and off-road capability. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive pairs with the X-MODE Dual-Mode system, offering Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings. With a best-in-class ground clearance of 8.3 inches and refined suspension, the 2026 Solterra ensures stable handling and confident maneuverability in various conditions.

Subaru equips the Solterra with a comprehensive suite of EyeSight driver-assistance technologies, including Pre-Collision Braking, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Alert, and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control, among others.
