8 Affordable Electric Cars expected in the U.S. (2025-2027)

Update (August 21, 2025): Next-gen Nissan Leaf (2025) and Next-gen Chevrolet Bolt (2026) updated.

2025 is set to be the turning point for the auto industry, kickstarting an intensive shift to EVs in entry-level segments. Several new low-priced EVs are to be released in the U.S. in the short term. Here are eight affordable electric cars that will be available to American buyers by 2027, in the price range of USD 25,000 to USD 35,000.

Low-cost Tesla Model Y (2025)

Tesla is introducing an affordable variant of the Model Y in late 2025 to lower monthly payments for buyers and maximize production capacity at its plants. Pictured is our illustration previewing the changes.

Tesla will roll out its first “affordable vehicle” later this year. “It’s just a Model Y,” CEO Elon Musk joked during the Q2 2025 earnings call, adding that he “let the cat out of the bag” when asked about the car’s looks.

We continue to expand our vehicle offering, including first builds of a more affordable model in June, with volume production planned for the second half of 2025.

Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering, had said that the lower-priced models “will resemble, in form and shape, the cars we currently make.” This version is expected to leave out features such as the glass roof, premium audio, rear touchscreen, ventilated and power-folding seats, and opt for simpler wheels, lights and bumpers. Musk confirmed that the more accessible Model Y will reach customers in Q4 2025.

Next-gen Nissan Leaf (2025)

The Nissan Leaf will move into its third generation this fall, transforming into a coupe-styled crossover. It’s based on a new dedicated EV platform called Ampr Medium, offering marked improvements in space, comfort, efficiency, and range.

Higher trims feature dual 14.3-inch Google-built-in displays; lower trims get 12.3-inch units. Both J1772 and NACS ports are fitted, supporting Plug & Charge and 150 kW fast-charging to 80% in about 35 minutes.

Battery options include 75 kWh (214 hp, 261 lb-ft, about 303 miles) or 52 kWh (174 hp, 254 lb-ft). Heat pump, Nissan Safety Shield 360, and regen paddles on higher trims complete the update. Priced (MSRP) starting at USD 29,990 for the S+ trim, it will compete with the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt.

Next-gen Chevrolet Bolt (2026)

The second-generation Chevrolet Bolt is currently finishing the development stage, and GM has confirmed plans to launch it as a crossover for the 2027 model year early next year.

Production is set to begin at the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas later this year. Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, hinted at GM’s 2024 Investor Day last October that indicated that the company would add a lower-cost, hatchback version later.

The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt (rendered) is a deep facelift of the former EUV model. It is expected to begin at around USD 29,000, positioned under the Equinox EV.

To be based on an updated version of the BEV2 platform that underpinned the earlier model, the 2027 Chevy Bolt will have a new battery pack consisting of LFP cells that are not only cheaper but also have a longer life than NMC cells.

The redesigned model should feature a heat pump for reduced energy consumption. The NACS charging port that makes it compatible with Tesla’s widespread Supercharger network has been confirmed. A new infotainment system that is more responsive and offers the latest connectivity features is also expected.

Toyota C-HR BEV (2026)

The all-electric C-HR, revealed in May 2025, delivers 338 hp, standard AWD, and a manufacturer-estimated 0–60 mph in about 5 seconds. Powered by a 74.7 kWh lithium-ion battery, it targets up to 290 miles of range, features a NACS port, with DC fast-charging (10–80% in about 30 minutes) plus Plug & Charge. Four-level regenerative braking is controlled via steering wheel paddles.

Built on the e-TNGA platform, it features a coupe-like SUV profile, 60/40 split-fold seats, and up to 25.4 cu. ft. cargo space. SE and XSE grades offer a 14-inch touchscreen, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, dual wireless chargers, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and available panoramic roof. The launch is set for 2026, with prices expected to start at just under USD 35,000.

Kia EV3 (2026/27)

The Kia EV3 has been spotted testing in the U.S., but the company hasn’t provided launch details. We reckon that Kia is targeting a price of under USD 35,000, and an EPA range of around 270 miles. Its aerodynamic 0.26 Cd body features vertical DRLs, five-spoke alloys, a clean tailgate, and a boat-tail rear for improved efficiency.

Inside, a ~30-inch triple-screen panel integrates a 12.3-inch cluster, 5-inch climate display, and 12.3-inch infotainment, with V2L capability and sustainable materials.

Two battery options, 58.3 kWh and 81.4 kWh, power a 201 hp motor, 0–62 mph in 7.5 seconds, and up to 373 miles WLTP. Fast-charging from 10–80% takes 31 minutes, with i-Pedal and Smart Regenerative braking standard. AWD and GT variants are planned.

Ford low-cost pickup truck (2027)

Ford has confirmed that its midsize electric pickup, launching in 2027 for about USD 30,000, will ride on the new ‘Universal EV Platform’ which is being developed in California.

It will be faster than our Mustang twin turbo. It will be fully connected with a brand new digital experience no one has seen in our country. It will offer, for the first time, fast charging; it will have amazing range; it can power your house for 6 days..you don’t need a generator, you just buy this truck! And we’re going to start the vehicle at 30,000 dollars.

Powered by Michigan-made LFP prismatic batteries, it targets sub-5-second 0–60 mph performance, improved handling from a low center of gravity, and a frunk plus locking bed. The minimalist interior will include a floating touchscreen, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, BlueCruise, and more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.

It will have 20% fewer components, 25% fewer fasteners, and three-quarters of a mile less wiring, enabling up to 40% faster assembly at the Louisville facility in Kentucky.

Jeep Renegade EV (2027)

The second generation of the Jeep Renegade will be available with a pure-electric powertrain, and will be sold in the United States. Based on the STLA Small platform, the Jeep Renegade EV should be available with a choice of two battery packs, one with low-cost LFP cells and the other with premium NMC cells. The latter may deliver an EPA-estimated range of around 250 miles.

The Renegade Electric will likely pack up to two 70 kW (94 hp) electric motors, leading to a system power of up to 140 kW (188 hp). Jeep plans to unveil the new small EV by 2027, and launch it at an attractive base price of “just below” USD 25,000, as revealed by Antonio Filosa, former CEO of Jeep, at the Stellantis Investor Day in June 2024.

Rivian R3 (2027)

The Rivian R3 is a hatchback-styled compact crossover positioned below the Rivian R2. Expected to be priced from around USD 35,000, it will be considerably cheaper than the current models, the R1T and R1S.

Rivian plans to sell the R3 with two battery pack options, with the bigger one expected to deliver an EPA-estimated range of over 300 miles. The vehicle will likely be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds if it comes in a tri-motor variant. An off-road-focused variant called Rivian R3X will also be available. While Rivian is yet to confirm the exact launch date, we expect the R3 to be on sale by end of 2027.
