Update: ‘2023 Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid’ and ‘2023 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid’ added.
According to a report released on March 1, 2022, by the U.S. Department of Energy, sales of plug-in electric vehicles in America almost doubled between 2020 and 2021. Sales went from 308,000 units to 608,000 units in 2021, proving the sheer demand for these cars. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, popularly known as PHEVs, plug the gap between fully electric vehicles (EVs) and regular hybrids well, hence offering the best of both worlds.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles usually consist of an internal combustion engine, a battery pack, and an electric motor. Unlike standard hybrids, the battery of a PHEV can not only be recharged externally but also provide at least a few miles of all-electric range, as it’s usually much bigger. Since a combustion engine charges the batteries, drivers don’t have to worry about the battery running out either. With that covered, let’s take a look at the top 10 plug-in hybrid models that cost under USD 50,000 in the U.S.:
